Mathematics Competitions and Enrichment Opportunities – 2026

Throughout the year, students will have the opportunity to participate in a range of mathematics competitions and enrichment programs designed to challenge their thinking, extend problem-solving skills, and foster a love of mathematics.

National Mathematics Competitions

Our school participates in several well-known national competitions organised through the Australian Mathematics Trust (AMT). These events allow students to experience engaging mathematical challenges and compare their thinking with students across Australia.

  • Kangourou Sans Frontières (KSF) – Held in March, this international competition introduces students to creative and accessible mathematical problems. It is a wonderful entry point for students interested in maths competitions. Students from Years 3 - 6.
  • ICAS Mathematics (and curriculum areas) – Taking place in August, ICAS provides students with an opportunity to demonstrate their mathematical reasoning and problem-solving skills in a nationally recognised assessment. Students from Years 2-6.
  • Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC) – Held in August, the AMC is one of Australia’s most popular mathematics competitions, featuring unique problem-solving questions that encourage students to think deeply and apply their knowledge in new ways.

Enrichment Programs for Highly Able Mathematicians

Students who demonstrate strong mathematical ability may be invited to participate in additional enrichment programs throughout the year. These programs provide challenging problems and collaborative learning opportunities.

APSMO Programs (Australasian Problem Solving Mathematical Olympiads)

  • Maths Quest – Years 1–2
  • Maths Explorer – Years 3–4
  • Maths Olympiad – Years 5–6

These programs focus on developing higher-order thinking, persistence, and creative mathematical problem solving. Completed in Term 2.

External Enrichment Opportunities

We also share opportunities offered by specialist schools and organisations that support mathematically curious students.

John Monash Science School (JMSS) – Year 5

Term 3

  • Mini Mathematicians: 8 students
  • Little Scientists: 8 students
  • Spike PriMARY (new): 4 students

G.A.T.E.Ways (Gifted and Talented Education)

  • Programs available for Years 1–3 and Years 4–6, offering extension workshops designed for highly able and gifted learners. TBC later in the year.

Participation in these opportunities helps students build confidence, resilience, and enthusiasm for mathematics while connecting with like-minded peers.

Further information and registration details will be shared with families throughout the year as opportunities become available by myself and/or your child’s classroom teacher.
