Year 1/2

Thank you and happy holidays!
We cannot believe we are coming to the end of term 2 already! The 1/2 team would like to say a big thank you to our wonderful students and families for a great term. There has been an abundance of learning, both academically, socially and emotionally from all students. We are so proud of their efforts and I'm sure they are all ready for a big break.
We hope they all have a safe and happy holiday.
Literacy:
In Literacy, students are currently in their procedure text unit. Students have been reading procedure texts like 'Wombat stew' and 'How to wash a Woolly Mammoth'. Students have explored comprehension strategies, like visualising, summarising and inferring, as well as completed vocabulary activities to learn some new words from these texts.
Students have been learning about the structure of procedure texts, and have been completing activities and experiments to then write a procedure text about. Students have explored the importance of verbs and adverbs in their writing, to give clear directions.
Maths:
In Maths, we have continued to explore the relationship between addition and subtraction and have been looking into how these relate to our everyday lives. The children have been using their new found knowledge of addition and subtraction to solve problems that they might come across in the real world, particularly involving money. We have been using our knowledge of skip counting to count collections of coins that make $1 and this week the children have drawn on a number of different strategies when “purchasing” items from our ‘1/2 Toy Catalogue’. This has most definitely been a highlight!
Humanities:
As part of our Humanities unit this term we have been learning about the ways in which Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples maintain connections to their Country/Place. We have been exploring Dreamtime stories, and last week recreated ‘How the Birds got their Colours’. The children loved working together to illustrate the story and are excited to borrow it from our student-author reading corner.
3/4 visit:
Students went across and visited the 3/4 students this week, to have some information texts read to them. The 3/4's taught the 1/2's all about farm animals.
