What's New!

Our Student Representative Council (SRC) has been busy this term, leading a range of exciting initiatives across the school.

One of our current projects is a school-wide drawing competition to design emblems for our houses with our newly elected mascots. We’ve already seen some creative and imaginative entries, and we look forward to announcing the winners soon. Earlier this term, SRC members also had the opportunity to lead school tours for incoming Prep families, showing them around our campus and giving them a glimpse of what a day at Essendon Primary looks like through the eyes of a student. In addition to this, the SRC proudly took part in activities for National Sorry Day and Reconciliation Week, helping our school reflect on the importance of respect, truth-telling, and unity. We’ve also been supporting the amazing work of the Green Team, who have been restoring the Parapet Gardens by planting drought-tolerant seedlings and cacti.

It’s been fantastic to see student leadership and sustainability in action. We’re looking forward to sharing more in our upcoming whole-school assembly later this term.

Green Team

Our Green Team, run by student volunteers, have been working hard to care for our environment and make our school a greener place to learn and grow.

Restoring the Parapet Gardens

The Parapet Gardens have been getting lots of attention this term. The soil in this area is very hard and dry, so the Green Team has been working hard to restore it slowly by introducing plants that are well suited to these conditions—tough, low-water plants like cacti and hardy seedlings. Students have been growing these plants from scratch with the goal of transplanting them into the garden to bring life and colour to the space over time.

Winter Seedlings Growing Strong

Elsewhere in the garden, the team has planted radishes, broccoli, peas, and celery to grow through the winter. These seedlings are already off to a great start, and we can’t wait to see how they grow in the coming weeks. The grade 5/6 students have also just planted Remembrance Poppies. Their goal is to transplant them to the parapet when they are strong enough so we have beautiful real poppies just in time for Remembrance Day in November.

Bin Duty Begins

Green Team members have also started weekly bin duty, where they empty the green bins from classrooms. Some of the waste is sent to our worm farm, while the rest goes into the school’s green waste bins. This is a great way to reduce landfill waste and help create compost for our gardens.
