Reconciliation Week

The theme for National Reconciliation Week 2025 is Bridging Now to Next.

The theme reflects the ongoing connection between past, present and future – learning from the past to look ahead and push forward together on the reconciliation journey.

The 2025 artwork has been created by Kalkadoon woman, Bree Buttenshaw, and features native plants known for regenerating and thriving, to symbolise strength, growth and commitment to walking together.

National Reconciliation Week is held from 27 May – 3 June every year, and is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures and achievements, and recommit to reconciliation and First Nations justice.

This week, we learned about the importance of Reconciliation Week and why it matters to all Australians. We talked about how we can show respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and cultures. As part of our learning, we took part in traditional games in PE and made artworks that showed connection and respect. We enjoyed learning through play and creativity and now understand more about how we can help build a kind and fair future for everyone.

In PE students learnt a game called Noongar Wana.

The young Noongar girls in the southwest of Western Australia played many skill games. In one of these a short stick was placed on the ground and the other girls attempted to hit the stick while the girl defended it using her wana (digging stick). Different versions of this game have been recorded by observers.

A wana is a digging stick in the Noongar language of the south-west of Western Australia. This game is named for the Aboriginal people who played it.

Players use an underarm throw to hit a target, which is defended by the player with a bat. This version is suitable for older students or for use in the playground.

In Science students learnt about Native Trees and Bush Medicine.

Year 5/6 students brain storming the actions they can take to help support Reconciliation in Australia now and in the future.
