Learning in Year 1

Since our last instalment, we have been very busy.

In Literacy, we were learning to provide reasons for our opinion during our persuasive writing unit. There were so many great reasons for all the topics we discussed. For example, 'Should recess be shorter?' YES because we need time to do more learning! NO so teachers can have time to do one extra thing! Keep on reading for some fantastic reasons across year one.

Currently, we are delving into poetry. This has been a wonderful opportunity for us to think about word choice and include adjectives into our writing. We have reflected on our senses to create A Sensory Poem on popcorn and ice-cream. YUM!

In Math, we have been exploring about solving addition and subtraction problems using a variety of strategies. We practised counting on and counting back using hands-on manipulatives and number lines. We improved our pictorial thinking through drawing pictures and using tens frame dots to draw more or cross out. Lastly, we learnt how to record these problems with the symbols plus and minus. It has been exciting to see many children finding success with different strategies. Don't forget to keep practising counting backwards!

Who's who in our Neighbourhood?

Recently we were lucky to enjoy another beautiful walk around our neighbourhood. This time we headed to Federation Estate so that we could continue making observations about our local community. When we arrived, we went straight to exploring the sensory garden and all its activities. There was so much play, laughter and fun!

Next, we had Andrew and Denise talk to us about the art inside the estate. In the first gallery we made connections with Stacey Payten's exhibition titled Gugubarra. It was great to hear the children identify the symbols for meeting place, boy, girl and emu tracks that we had been looking at in class. In the second exhibition, we were captivated by what was hiding within the art. The children were so respectful as they shone UV torches to discover hidden messages. Lastly, we met some artists from the community who were painting. They showed such patience and kindness towards our classes, explaining their art and allowing some of them to try out their tools. The children were so engaged and curious about all they saw.

With only a few more weeks left of school, we are looking forward to deepening our understanding about the features of places and creating a mini streetscape of all the things we value in our community. Hopefully this will lead to us becoming more active citizens in helping look after and care for our community.
