Mr Derek Lennon
Last weekend saw Marist host St Edmund’s College. It was a big day of rugby at football at Ashgrove. On Friday night the 1st IV chess team had an exciting 10-6 win, with our primary A and B teams coming away with good wins as well. Overall we won all aggregate matches against SEC in both codes and finished the day with football having 27 wins, 4 draws and 6 losses; and in rugby 29 wins and 5 losses.
Good luck to our Cross Country team who head out to Curlew Park on Wednesday to represent the College in the 27th AIC Cross Country Championship. Marist has a long and proud history in cross country, winning 14 of the 26 events held to date and defending last year’s Primary and Secondary championship double. We wish the boys all the very best and thank all the staff involved in the program, led by Coordinator Mr Matt Millward, Assistant Mr Marcus Schrader, Head Coach (Old Boy) Mr Thomas Prole and Mr John Lambourne, Head of Sport Primary.
Last weekend saw Marist host St Edmund’s College for our Super Saturday, our biggest home day of the year. Thank you to the many, many people who made the day so spectacular for the community. The weather was not kind, but the day was special for Marist with big support across the codes and some terrific results highlighted by our 1st XV winning 61-5 and the 1st XI winning a nailbiter 2-1 in the dying minutes with a special goal from Charlie Garton. Both teams remain in first place, undefeated, with two rounds to go.
Registrations
As we get towards the end of term 2 our term 3 sports are starting to ramp up. It is vital that all participants are registered as soon as possible as this is how you will receive information about the season.
Coordinators
Tennis- Mr Andrew Ward warda@marash.qld.edu.au
Rugby League- Mr Ryan Apps appsr@marash.qld.edu.au
Basketball- Ms Samantha Davids davidss@marash.qld.edu.au
Hockey- Ms Kathryn Badini badinik@marash.qld.edu.au
Track & Field- Mr Richard Graham grahamr@marash.qld.edu.au
Uniforms
As our Term 3 sports have limits on team numbers do not purchase new playing uniforms until teams are finalised and confirmed.
As we get closer to the end of term and assessment pressure starts to build and boys are feeling a little bit stressed in juggling their commitments it is important to remember that boys thrive on routine. If you are used to training on a Monday afternoon then that is what you should be doing, even if you have an exam on the Tuesday. Exercise and fresh air are great stress relievers. If boys are feeling overwhelmed, please contact your coach and year co-ordinator in advance to explain why you are going to miss training.
With a couple of weeks to go I remind all boys playing football and rugby to maintain your discipline and focus on the task at hand. Marist men should not retaliate, regardless of the provocation, and should never be the instigator of poor behaviour. We win and lose with respect for the opponent, officials, ourselves, and the game. The AIC has some guiding principles in our vision as a competition that we want to “develop good and healthy young people of character through sport and competition within a Christian context.” This goes for spectators as well. I have received lots of positive emails and reports where our boys have done positive things, but one incident can paint us all in a bad light so let’s finish hard and with respect and dignity.
Sports Selections
Sporting teams at Marist College Ashgrove will be selected using specific criteria for each sport. Detailed selection policies for each sport can be accessed on the College App or by contacting the relevant activity coordinator or director.
The selection of teams or individuals for events is taken very seriously by all staff, as is promotion and relegation of players considering the sport specific criteria in addition to ability and skill level, attitude and aptitude and attendance at training and competition.
In relation to player selection the College has clear guidelines for students and parents to follow.
General Concerns/Grievances
If a student or parent wishes to provide feedback on any aspects of the sporting program, they are most welcome to do so. There are clear guidelines for students and parents to follow:
Dusty Miller
Congratulations to Dusty Miller on an outstanding achievement at the recent Queensland State MAG Championships. Competing in the Level 7 Open division, Dusty was crowned State Champion, placing 1st in the All-Around, 1st on Pommel and Vault, and earning 3rd place on Parallel Bars and High Bar.
This result is a testament to Dusty’s dedication and discipline. His commitment to training has now seen him rewarded with selection to the Queensland State Team, where he will represent the state at Nationals in July.

Super Saturday | What a Day!!..
Despite an incredibly wet day, nothing could dampen the spirit of everyone who attended Super Saturday at Marist College. Rain may have fallen, but the atmosphere and energy was electric from the start of the day to the finish.
More than 30 games of rugby were played between Marist and the four different opposition schools who visited the College. Even in the wet, the on-field performances matched the quality and the variety of the day. Every match was delivered at the highest level, with students, coaches, and supporters all contributing to the success of the event.
From the Old Boys Reunion Day to the Boarding Family Fun Day, giveaways, the supporters’ bar, and prize draws, the event captured everything that is great about our rugby community, connection, and school spirit.
For those who were there to witness it, the 1st XV singing Sub Tuum post-match to the Old Boys, and the Old Boys singing it proudly back, was a moment of genuine connection and tradition. It’s a memory that will last for a very long time and one that perfectly captured the essence of the day.
A huge thank you to everyone who helped make Super Saturday one of the most memorable days of the rugby union calendar. From our College events team through to our volunteer canteen staff, we are extremely grateful for your support.
Boarders vs Dayboys| 2025 Rugby Union Match
The annual Boarders vs Dayboys rugby union match kicked off AIC Round 5 and a weekend of festivities that included Super Saturday. This traditional fixture is played for the Boarders vs Dayboys Challenge Shield and represents a healthy, respectful rivalry that dates back to the foundation of the College.
The 2024 winners, the Dayboys, entered the match looking to defend their title, while the Boarders were determined to avenge last year’s defeat. Played on Friday afternoon in wet and difficult conditions, both teams delivered an excellent standard of rugby. The match was physical, fast-paced, and attacking, with both sides showing a fierce competitiveness and desire to win.
Well done to Hamish Munro (Dayboys) and Hugo Baker (Boarders) for receiving Man of the Match honours as voted for by their peers.
Despite the weather, the support from the crowd was exactly what you’d expect from a local derby, passionate and vocal. The game was even fittingly overlooked by the AIC Round 5 Chess fixtures taking place in the Cyprian Pavilion above.
Congratulations to all students involved in what was another memorable match and a fitting way to kick off Super Saturday.
Marist vs Villanova College | AIC Round 6
Round 6 of the AIC Rugby Union season sees Marist take on Villanova College in an away fixture at Tingalpa.
Whilst a draw like this would normally see our Year 9 to 12 teams play away and our Year 5 to 8 games hosted at Marist, this weekend is an exception, with 25 matches scheduled to be played at the College. We encourage all families to carefully check Parent Orbit and College emails throughout the week for the most up-to-date information regarding this weekend’s schedule.
Team lists for Round 6 will be released on Friday morning.
Best of luck to all teams for another great weekend of rugby.
Marist Rugby Union | Year Level Coordinators
As we move into the latter stages of the AIC Rugby Union season, clear communication remains essential for effective planning and team selection.
We ask that all families continue to communicate directly with the relevant year level coordinator. Please contact your coordinator for all non-selection matters, including lateness, unavailability, and game or training timings.
Senior school students are expected to take responsibility and make contact with both their coordinator and coach themselves.
Thank you for your ongoing support and cooperation.

Marist Rugby Union | Round 5 vs St Edmund’s College
Thank you to everyone who came out to support Round 5 of the AIC Rugby season. A huge thank you in particular to the students who braved the wet conditions and joined “The Hive”. The game day tunnel cheering the 1st XV onto the field was one of the longest I’ve seen at the College. It speaks volumes about the connection and culture that continues to grow within our rugby union program.
The Super Saturday round kicked off on Friday afternoon with the traditional, annual grudge match between the Boarders and the Dayboys. In what was a skillful and hard-fought contest, both teams displayed genuine commitment in representing their jersey. Congratulations to the Boarders, who were seeking redemption after a loss in 2024, and eventually claimed a 17–12 victory.
Special mention to Hugo Baker (Boarders) and Hamish Munro (Dayboys), who were named Players of the Match for their dominant performances, as voted by their peers.
Thank you to all the students involved on Friday for their positive approach to the game and for their continued support across Saturday’s fixtures.
Following a wonderful week of sunshine, the skies opened up on Friday afternoon, setting the stage for what was to come on Saturday. Despite the extremely wet conditions, congratulations to all the Marist teams for the quality of their catch-pass execution and the style of running rugby they played throughout the day.
In total, 33 of Marist’s 36 teams took the field at Marist in what was a full day of our youngest bumblebees through to our 1st XV.
The 1st XV continued their undefeated run with an extremely dominant first half built on simplicity, patience, and physicality. In front of a vocal crowd of Old Boys gathered in the Cyprian Pavilion, Marist scored six first-half tries running towards the Cyprian and ultimately secured a commanding 61-5 victory in pouring rain.
The 2nd XV bounced back strongly after their Round 4 loss to SLC, delivering a fantastic performance that reflected improved preparation and focus. The 3rd XV through to the 5th XV were similarly too strong and too well prepared for their opponents. Across all three matches, the quality of Marist’s catch-pass skills and superior conditioning stood out, contributing to consistent and high-level performances.
The 6th XV suffered their first loss of the season in a tight and physical contest against Iona’s 5th XV. Despite dominating possession and territory in the final 10 minutes, Marist were unable to break through the Iona defence to snatch a win. Earlier in the day, the 7th XV set the tone with a strong victory over Iona’s 6th XV.
Congratulations to all Opens players and coaches for their continued commitment and performance. Attendance at training has been outstanding, and it’s clear that the work being done during the week is translating into results on game day.
Well done to the Year 10 cohort, who remained undefeated across the round. The group played a consistent and disciplined standard of rugby, which highlights the strong depth and cohesion within the year level. Despite being challenged by a number of injuries, the teams continued to perform at a high level. Thank you to all players, coaches, and support staff for the ongoing good work and commitment to the program.
Well done to the Year 9 cohort, who went through the weekend's fixtures undefeated. The group played a consistent standard of rugby, reflecting the strong depth and the quality of coaching within the year level. A special thank you to the students who backed up from the 9E match to play for the 9Ds—your willingness to step up for your mates shows the pride in the bumblebee and unity that exists in this group. Thank you to all players, coaches, and support staff for the ongoing commitment and energy you bring to the program.
Congratulations to the Year 8 cohort on an excellent day of rugby across all teams. The year level delivered some excellent rugby in terrible conditions, showcasing not only improving talent but also the impact of strong coaching and teamwork. Thank you to all players, coaches, and support staff for your continued effort, enthusiasm, and dedication to the program.
The 7A to 7C teams delivered outstanding performances, going through the round without conceding a single point. Ruthless in defence, their defensive line connection and tackling were a clear strength across all three matches, balanced with some wonderful Marist catch-pass and running rugby in the terrible conditions. The 7D team faced Iona’s 7C side, who proved too strong on the day, however they gave a strong account of themselves and it was great to see them play. Thank you to the players who backed up to support their teammates and year level mates. It speaks volumes about the connection and culture of the Year 7 rugby program. A sincere thanks also to the coaches for their continued time, care, and effort in developing the Year 7 cohort.
Despite the wet conditions, it was an outstanding day filled with quality rugby and a strong sense of community. It is fantastic to see every student play and enjoy 50 minutes of rugby, and learn some of the great history and traditions. Thank you to our coordinators, coaches, and supporters for making the day such a great success.
We now turn our attention to Round 6 against Villanova. With only two rounds left to play, it is an important time to enjoy the last few weeks of training and games

Round 5 vs St Edmunds College
Round Five saw us taking on St Edmund's College with 28 of our 40 teams playing at home for Super Saturday at Ashgrove. It was a great day of Football around the grounds with many teams putting in their best performances of the season despite the wet conditions. A special mention to the Year 8 and Opens cohorts who came through the weekend undefeated. The 1st XI picked up another 3 points thanks to goals from Giacomo Calabrese and a 79th minute winner from Charlie Garton which were enough to seal a 2-1 victory and move into 1st place with two rounds left to play.
Congratulations to the following teams who remain undefeated after four competitive rounds of Football: 1st XI; 5th XI; 6th XI; 10B; 10C; 8A; 7D; 6A; 6C Blue; 6C Gold; 6D; 5B.
Cup Competitions
As well as competing in the AIC, Marist enters teams into the ISSA Cup, Bill Turner Cup and Uhlsport Cup which are U14, U15 and 1st XI competitions and a great way to compete against different schools outside our sporting association.
The ISSA Cup team won their second pool match last week 3-0 against Grace Lutheran College and will be looking to finish the group stage strongly against Glasshouse Christian College in Week 9.
The Bill Turner Cup team played a strong Ipswich Grammar side on Tuesday and put on a great performance despite eventually going down 3-2. After fighting back from an early 2-0 deficit the boys hit the post twice in search of a late equaliser that wasn’t meant to be. It was very encouraging to see how we stacked up against a quality GPS school and indicative of the progress made throughout the season.
After two pool matches, the 1st XI sit top of their Uhlsport Cup group with 3-1 wins against both Kelvin Grove State College and St James College. They’ll be looking to finish the group stage strongly with a Week 9 fixture against The Gap State High School.
Football – Training Schedules
The Football training schedule will be posted weekly on the Orbit App for all parents to see. Now that the majority of public holidays / student free days have occurred there will be very little movement in training days (if any) for the vast majority of Football teams. While the result was a positive one, the team remains focused on building strong habits and continuing their development as they prepare for the upcoming AIC season next term.
