Round the classes

Indonesian: Ibu Susan

In Indonesian we have started our new topic Muka Saya (My Face). The students have been busy labelling faces and describing features like hair and eye colour. The younger classes are learning the song Kepala, Bahu, Lutut dan Kaki (Heads, Shoulders, Knees and Toes). The year 4/5 and 5/6 students are also completing research projects about Indonesian animals and islands.

Sallie's class is enjoying a short novel about a boy called Sarindi who lives in Yogyakarta with his parents (a becak driver and an artist). The students have the opportunity to participate in the Indonesian Premier's Reading Challenge with this book. We have also welcomed our new teddies for this term, Made the Monyet and Kuat the Komodo Dragon.

Art: Mrs Tume

All students have begun units of work on ‘self’ this term, exploring this topic through various areas of The Arts. Junior Primary students are creating posters about themselves through media arts. Using the Pic Collage app, students are learning creative features of the app and exploring how to capture, arrange and delete images. The year 2/ 3 class are interacting with the Book Creator app, to develop a digital book about themselves with a focus on different types of photography. Through visual arts the year 3/ 4 class are creating ‘Song of Me’ zig- zag books inspired from the book ‘Every Child a Song.’ Upper Primary students have just completed a visual arts realistic/symbolic representation of self and are in the early stages of developing a plan on storyboard to use media arts to develop different ways of expressing self and ideas, considering digital techniques, space, time and movement.

PE: Troy

This week, we were lucky enough to have Clarise from Hockey SA run some clinics for us. Students were taught the skills of hitting and trapping It's also an opportunity to experience a different sport and get information on how to play at local clubs in the area.

This term, students have been learning throwing and catching in the early years. Students have been doing this through stations, which practice key skills when throwing and catching. Students are learning how to record partners using an iPad to self and peer assess based on the fundamental skill we are learning.

The Year 2/3 and 3/4 classes have been learning soccer and playing modified games to practice the main skills needed. Students are getting ready to use these skills to play some miniroo soccer games.

The two older classes have been doing badminton. Students have learnt grips, lunge shots, clears, and general control to begin playing modified games across half-court. We look forward to having a modified tournament to finish our unit.

Science: Jess

Exploring States of Matter in Science

This term in Science, our primary students have been diving into the fascinating world of States of Matter, with a special focus on solids, liquids, and gases. From the very start, curiosity has been our compass, guiding students as they explored different materials and discovered what things are made of and why certain materials are chosen for specific purposes.

Hands-on learning has been at the heart of our science lessons. One of the highlights was making Oobleck – the mysterious substance that's not quite a solid and not quite a liquid! Students were amazed as they discovered how this strange material behaves differently depending on how you touch it. It sparked lots of discussion and wonder about how matter can change and act in surprising ways.

In another creative project, our younger students built structures out of cardboard boxes, using their understanding of solid materials to design and construct. This activity not only reinforced their learning about solids but also allowed them to explore the practical uses of materials in everyday life.

In the upper primary years, we took our investigations further by exploring the density of liquids. Using oil, water, and honey, students made predictions and then tested their ideas, watching in real time how different liquids layer on top of one another. This simple but powerful experiment brought big science concepts to life and led to some deep thinking and great conversations.

Throughout the term, it’s been wonderful to see our young scientists using their natural curiosity to ask thoughtful questions, test their ideas, and apply their prior knowledge to new challenges. Their enthusiasm for discovery has made our science room a vibrant hub of learning.

We’re proud of how our students are developing as critical thinkers and budding scientists. We look forward to even more exciting explorations in the terms ahead!

Gardening: Jo

'Worms' is the focus topic this term. The year 3/4's are investigating where they live and observing their body parts. Mini worm farms were made and the students tracked where the worms had travelled the following week. The students could see the worms had tunnelled through the soil and sand to get food and in doing so aerated the soil. We finished off the gardening sessions by making pizza.

Sallie's Class Podcast

Eloise and Ashton discuss what reading looks like in our class and give us some handy tips. The podcast is 6 minutes long.
