The Humanities

The Bible makes clear that God works out His purpose for humankind through History, and that the process of change in human society over time is intentional and is part of God’s will and purpose for His people. An understanding of God’s overall plan for salvation is the framework within which the study of specific periods of History is undertaken. Furthermore, Christians are encouraged to be good stewards of their resources in everyday life. The Commerce course aims to help students reflect on their own responsibilities as a consumer and consider what it means to take a Christian ‘world view’ in relation to business and economics in the global economy.
In Year 8, the study of History and Geography continues to follow the standards as outlined in the Victorian Curriculum building on the skills students have developed in Year 7 General Studies. The History component focuses on the ‘Ancient to Modern World: 650-1750 CE’ with a strong focus on Medieval Europe, the Spanish Conquest of the Americas and Shogunate Japan. In the study of Geography, students study landforms and landscapes before moving on to a study of ‘Changing Nation’ analysing patterns in migration and population. As they study Civics and Citizenship, students are encouraged to explore a particular issue where they would like to see social and political change and then create a campaign around promoting this change. Our Economics unit explores the Economics of Chocolate, where students learn the basics of economics within a socially responsible framework.
