Year Six

Dear Year Six families,

We are right in the midst of a busy Term Two with lots happening from camps to incursions and Winter sports!

The Ranch Camp

We are thrilled to announce deposits for the Ranch Camp are now live on XUNO!

The value of The Ranch for our students builds on all the learner profile attributes, allowing our students to be present in the 'here and now'.

The importance of the outdoors for our physical, mental and spiritual wellbeing will never change.

The final cost of the camp will be approximately $440.00. This cost will be communicated once we have confirmed the student numbers.

Please note that there will be two groups going:

Group 1 - Mon 25th Aug - Wed 27th Aug 2025

Group 2 - Wed 27th Aug - Fri 29th Aug 2025

Unfortunately, we are unable to advise which classes will be going with which group at this early stage. The class groups will be dependent on number of students attending the camp which cannot be determined until deposit payments have been received.

The deposit of $150 is to secure your child's spot at the camp and is due by Friday the 27th of June.

Canberra Camp

By Sean Rabai and Joshua Dorey 6B

On Monday the 2nd of June, 41 selected students travelled to Canberra by bus. The journey took around 10 hours, with frequent stops along the way.

On the first night, we enjoyed a buffet dinner featuring butter chicken, followed by a fun evening of camp trivia to finish the day.

On the second day, we had an early start and visited the Deep Space Communication Complex. Afterwards, we participated in a range of activities, including the Royal Australian Mint, Old Parliament House, and the National Electoral Education Centre.

On the third day, we visited the Australian War Memorial to pay our respects to the ANZACs who risked and sacrificed their lives for our country. We then explored Questacon, where we took part in exciting STEM activities. After dinner, we had a great time playing laser tag.

On the fourth day, we visited the National Arboretum and Parliament House. Our final day was spent travelling the 10 hours back home.

Overall, Canberra Camp was an amazing experience, and we would love to go again!

Inquiry

This term in Inquiry, Year Six students have been exploring the different levels of government in Australia—local, state, and federal—and the roles each play in shaping our society. They have begun to unpack the concept of democracy, including the rights and responsibilities of both citizens and governments. A highlight of our learning was a visit from our local State Member of Parliament, Mathew Hilakari. Mr Hilakari shared insights into his role representing the electorate of Point Cook, answered student questions, and helped deepen our understanding of how state government works in a democratic system. His visit inspired thoughtful discussion and helped students connect their classroom learning with real-world experiences.

Last week, students also took part in a virtual incursion run by the Parliamentary Education Office, where they learned about the structure and function of Australia’s federal government. The session gave students a clearer understanding of how laws are made and the roles of the two houses of Parliament; the House of Representatives and the Senate. They discovered how Members of Parliament represent the people in the House of Representatives, while Senators represent their states and territories. The incursion was informative, allowing students to ask questions and deepen their understanding of how federal politics operates in a democratic system.

Literacy

Our Writing focus has shifted to persuasive texts. Students have worked on examining the purpose, structure, and language features that make persuasive writing effective. This focus directly supports their Inquiry learning, as they will soon be crafting speeches to present their case for why they should be elected to Year Six Parliament. Through this, they are learning how to express their opinions clearly, use evidence to support their arguments, and engage an audience - valuable skills for both school and beyond.

Numeracy

In Numeracy, students have been investigating different ways to represent and interpret data. They are learning to analyse data sets, construct graphs, and draw conclusions from information. These skills are being applied across various subject areas, helping students become more confident in using data to support their thinking and decision-making.

Winter Sports

Sports training continues each Thursday morning for all students participating in Winter Sports, with Gala Day coming up on Tuesday 17th June. We have boys and girls teams for Netball, Hockey, T-Ball, Football (AFL) and Soccer representing Saltwater College.
