Year Three

Dear Year Three Families,
We’re excited to share the fantastic learning experiences from this fortnight. It has been a busy and productive time, filled with exploration and growth. Students have continued to demonstrate the attributes of thinkers, communicators, and risk-takers by consistently challenging themselves and striving to meet their learning goals.
Reading
In Reading, the Year Threes have been diving into the important skill of summarising nonfiction texts and the students are doing a fantastic job!
Students are learning how to:
- Identify main ideas and key supporting details
- Distinguish between essential and non-essential information
- Use their own words to create summaries
We’ve practiced these skills while reading texts about our Unit of Inquiry topic which focuses on emergency services such as Firefighters, Police and Paramedics. Students have been working in groups and independently to break down paragraphs, highlight key points, and retell the information in a few strong sentences.
Students have also been looking at Non-fiction features that help readers locate, organise, and understand facts. This week, we focused on identifying:
- Headings and Subheadings
- Table of Contents
- Glossary.
Students are showing much more understanding in these areas and are enjoying the current reading focus.
Writing
In Writing, students have been developing their skills as informational text writers. They have explored the difference between fact and fiction, learning to identify and use factual language to inform the reader. With a strong focus on structure and clarity, students are learning how headings and subheadings help organise information into meaningful sections. Using their research about different parts of the school and hospitals they have begun writing detailed paragraphs, starting with an engaging introduction and moving through the full writing process : planning, drafting, revising, and editing. Students are revising their work with thoughtful reflection, refining word choice and sentence structure to ensure their writing is clear, effective, and ready to be published. This unit has empowered students to confidently share their knowledge through well-structured informative texts.
Maths
In Maths, students have started learning about additive thinking, with a focus on learning different strategies such as jump strategy on a number line, split strategy, compensation strategy and vertical addition. They have enjoyed applying these strategies to solve word problems and have been challenged to use their addition skills within the Launch, Explore, and Discuss (LED) model. This approach helps them deepen their understanding and to demonstrate their problem-solving abilities through open-ended questions.
Inquiry
Students have commenced a new unit of inquiry under the transdisciplinary theme “How We Organise Ourselves,” focusing on the central idea: “Effective systems prioritise community welfare.” To initiate their thinking, they were presented with a series of thought-provoking scenarios highlighting instances where systems were not functioning optimally. Students critically analysed the impact on communities and proposed potential improvements. They developed an understanding of what constitutes a system, explored its key components, and investigated how these elements are interconnected—focusing on systems such as education, healthcare, and emergency services.
Reminders:
-Please encourage students to complete their homework this fortnight. The home is found in their class google classroom page.
- Please make sure all the student absences are recorded on Xuno and a comment is provided.
Kind Regards,
Year Three Team.
