Year Two

Dear Year 2 Families,
The Year 2 students have been exploring so many new topics and have had so much fun with them.
Spelling:
Students have been exploring some new topics in Spelling in the past fortnight! They have been exposed to verbs including past, present and future verbs. They have taken some of this home for their homework and this will be continued until the end of term.
Homework:
Students have started new homework, they are focusing on verbs and describing words. They are encouraged to be adding books to the Primers Reading Challenge.
Writing:
The Year twos have really enjoyed Writing as they have been exploring identifying elements in a narrative including:
Setting
Characters
Beginning
Middle (Problem)
End
They have also been exploring activities where they have to describe a range of images.
Inquiry:
Students have been busy presenting their Unit of Inquiry 2 projects to share their discoveries about the human body. Students enjoyed learning about the systems of the human body and sharing their knowledge with their peers.
Students have recently had their provocation for their new Unit of Inquiry under the central idea 'All cultures share the planet with first nations people.'
Over the coming weeks, students will be inquiring into the customs and traditions of the first nations people.
Reading:
Students have absolutely loved their class novel 'Charlotte's Web', they have recently started the unit of 'Summarising'. A summary tells the most important parts of a story (or part of a story) — who it’s about, what happened, what the problem was, and how it ended. We don’t include every little detail. Whereas a Retell requires more detail. Students are summarising using the strategy called ' Somebody, Wanted, But, So, Then' or SWBST.
Maths:
Students have been learning about two-dimensional shapes and subtraction strategies over the past couple of weeks.
Students have learnt about the properties and features of two-dimensional shapes. They have learnt how different shapes can have curved, straight and parallel lines.
Students have started to learn how to use various strategies to solve subtraction problems. They have learnt how to count back and use a number line to solve subtraction problems. Students have also been learning how to solve worded problems using their knowledge of subtraction.
Important reminders:
Students are expected to bring their satchel to school every day filled with their take-home reading books, reading journal and homework book.
Students are also expected to bring their iPad to every day fully charged, as well as a water bottle.
Doors open at 8:20am and classes start at 8:30am. Any students arriving after 8:40am will require a late pass from the office. Dismissal is at 2:50pm.
