Student Leadership

Student Congress

On Thursday, 1st May, we had over 70 students from year 7 to year 12 participate in our first Student Congress of the year. This was an opportunity whereby students were presented with information on our college history and the changes that have occurred over time, giving context to our next steps looking toward our future. Students then looked at our identity as a school and discussed the values they believe ground us as a school.

Overall, it was an extremely productive Congress where students actively expressed their voices and engaged in robust conversations regarding the future direction and image of the College. It was humbling to see so many students invested in the process and wanting the best for their peers.

Below are some comments from some of our Congress members.

Being part of Student Congress gave me the chance to really listen to my peers and help make sure their voices were part of the bigger picture. I really enjoyed listening to Zonya talking about the history of the school and our connection to the Manuka flower and the Crescam. I participated in the group sessions and worked on proposals that centred on student engagement, respect, and our community. I’m proud that we were able to bring those values into conversations about the College’s vision and making it clear that a supportive and respectful environment should be at the heart of everything we do.

My time on Student Congress was focused on pushing the college to think more about what we value as students and what we believe our values should be. I worked with other students to propose ideas that revolved around respect and integrity. It was important to me that our College’s future reflects those values—not just in words, but in action. Being part of that process helped me see how real change can happen when students have a seat at the table.

Serving on Student Congress taught me the importance of collaboration and honest opinion sharing with my peers. One of the things I’m most proud of is helping contribute to shape the College’s values so it better reflects who we are: a community grounded in respect, integrity and shared responsibility. It was also interesting looking at the values of the nearby primary school and trying to take this into account.
