Alumni Spotlight

🎓 Alumni Spotlight: Natalie Hogg
From the classrooms of Berwick College to the corridors of international diplomacy, Natalie Hogg (Class of 2013) is making an incredible impact on the global stage.
Now serving as a Diplomat at the Australian High Commission in Port Moresby, Natalie leads Australia’s efforts in the law and justice sector under the recent bilateral security agreement with Papua New Guinea. Her work focuses on strengthening anti-corruption measures, improving access to justice for vulnerable communities, and promoting humanitarian protection in the PNG Highlands.
đź’Ľ From Berwick to the World
Natalie’s pathway began with a strong academic foundation—first studying Commerce and Law at Deakin University before transferring to Monash to complete her Bachelor of Laws. After becoming a qualified solicitor, her legal career took her from corporate law in Melbourne to government contracting in Canberra, and eventually to the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT).
Her roles have spanned crisis management, maritime security, and regional geopolitics— including a posting in the Solomon Islands. She’s currently completing a Master of International Law through ANU while living and working in PNG.
🌟 Guided by Mentors, Grounded by Values
Natalie fondly remembers being mentored in Year 12 by former Berwick College principal Ms Bolch, who offered invaluable support during her high-pressure final year. “I was incredibly focused—maybe too focused—on achieving a high ATAR to pursue law,” Natalie shares. “Her encouragement helped shape both my confidence and direction.”
đź’¬ Words That Guide Her
As the first in her family to attend university, Natalie reflects on how easy it can be to compare yourself to others in highly competitive fields. Her favourite quote, by Dr Kristin Neff, speaks to this:
“Common humanity provides the wisdom to understand that we’re not alone, and to see that imperfection is part of the shared human experience.”
👏 A True Global Citizen
From fighting corruption to improving justice systems for youth and survivors of violence, Natalie’s work is a powerful example of leadership, compassion, and purpose. She’s showing us that success isn’t just about titles or destinations—it's about staying grounded in your values and using your voice for meaningful change.

Industry Insight Session: KPMG Visit
On Friday, 30th May, a group of our VCE Accounting students had the privilege of attending an Industry Insight Day at KPMG Australia - an invaluable opportunity to explore what a future in the corporate and finance sectors might look like.
Held at KPMG’s Melbourne office, the session provided students with a behind-the-scenes look at one of Australia’s Big Four accounting firms, known for its work across audit, tax, compliance, and consulting. The day highlighted the many career pathways available in accounting, finance, and business, and offered a clearer picture of how skills developed in the classroom can be applied in real-world contexts.
In small-group discussions, students heard from KPMG professionals about the varied career pathways into the firm - from accounting and law to IT and data analytics. They also gained insight into a typical day at KPMG, where balancing independent tasks with strong teamwork is key. These honest conversations offered practical advice on choosing a career that sparks joy, curiosity, and dedication - one that leaves you fulfilled and always learning.
A standout moment came from KPMG Employee Glenn Took, who encouraged students to adopt a mindset where “everything is interesting.” It was a powerful reminder that curiosity is a strength - and that seeing each subject or challenge as an opportunity to learn is not only a great way to approach study, but also a valuable outlook for life beyond school.
We extend our sincere thanks to KPMG for hosting our students and for your warm hospitality, and to Ourschool (a not-for-profit organisation promoting alumni communities in public schools) for making this opportunity possible. Special thanks to Glenn Took and the KPMG team for sharing your time, stories, and encouragement - your insights left a lasting impression.
And who knows - maybe one day, one of these students will return to KPMG, not as a visitor, but as a proud Berwick College alum and valued member of the KPMG team.
