Rugby Incursion

On Thursday 3 August, the VET Sports and Recreation class welcomed to the school, Meretiana Robinson as part of Rugby Victoria's secondary school incursion program. Met's as she is affectionately known, recently retired as the Melbourne Rebels Super W Vice-Captain and was fantastic in imparting her knowledge of how to physically and nutritionally prepare for sports conditioning situations. Highlights of the training session included students learning best practice warm-up techniques, competitive minor games against their peers, and an all-in turbo rugby game with students showing off their athleticism. Meretiana and Rugby Victoria will visit the school three times during August before students are tested on their physical athleticism during Week 8!

I am proud of the students and the way they conducted themselves during these training sessions.

In our second Rugby Victoria clinic, our Sports and Recreation students were coached by the incredible Mike Tauai. Mike is the current Diversity and Inclusion Manager for Rugby Victoria, having previously played internationally in Italy, New Zealand, and also in Australia. In this session, students learned about the Ruck and Maul phases of play in Rugby Union, which involves using your body effectively to tackle and protect the ball. The session was tough, with Mike drilling our students with a range of different activities like passing and defensive movement drills, in addition to using tackle bags. It was great to see all of our students participate in the session, pushing themselves to improve their aerobic and anaerobic fitness levels as part of their ‘Participate in Conditioning for Sport’ unit of competency. The students now turn their sights to Term 4, where they are currently planning a coaching clinic for the students of Tarneit P-9! I am very proud of this group and all of their achievements so far.
