Principal's Report

I am reminded this week of how important it is to celebrate what a wonderful community we have at Tarneit Senior College. We are a lucky community with such a rich history, a wonderfully diverse and multicultural community as well as students and staff that are proud to be a part of Tarneit Senior College. This has been a tough week for our community and I am sure all students, staff and parents have had concerns about how to better support our wider community. We as a school are committed to creating the most positive and rewarding school that we can be. A school that celebrates diversity, a school that celebrates achievements and a school that fosters an environment of support and empathy for all.

We, as a school, will continue to review a range of ways in which we create a positive and supportive environment including student engagement policies, behaviour expectations and codes of conduct. We are reinforcing our expectations with all students in our classrooms and assemblies. All students involved in incidents that go against our Student Engagement Policy or our Student Code of Conduct are engaged in Return to School interviews outlining expectations and ensuring the safety of every member of our community.

We would love our families to continue this work at home and have the conversation with their children around how school can continue to be a positive learning experience for all students. We welcome these conversations with our entire community.

Courtyard Takeover

On Wednesday the school invited a range of social, cultural, and local youth groups into the school to create a positive welcoming event engaging our entire student body. It was a wonderful way to bring together our students after a trying week and one in which our students felt a sense of disconnect. Our Wellbeing Team organised a fun-filled positive environment that took over the entire courtyard seeing a range of active games, mental health supports, and even a massive bus for students to find and engage with positive role models and activities with their peers. This is the first of many school engagement and positive activities planned for our cohort in 2023 and beyond.

Congratulations to Kiara & Joshua

Two of our students, Kiara Huynh and Joshua Suto represented Tarneit Senior College expertly in the 2023 UN Youth Australia Evatt Competition. Both of them have secured a place in the Semi-Finals to take place in Early September.

The Evatt Competition places students in the shoes of UN Security Council nations to debate on issues of international security, human rights, and current affairs. Students from Years 9 to 12 compete in teams of two from their own school with the aim of passing a resolution which suits the interests of their state. Successful teams from the preliminary rounds will progress to the state final, with the winners going on to represent Victoria at the annual Evatt National Final.

Meet & Connect

Meet & Connect Days were held on Thursday 31st August and Friday 1st September. These were two successful days allowing our staff, students, and parents to connect and have vital conversations around the education and learning progress of your children. It was great to see so many families take up the opportunity to meet with our staff and we look forward to seeing students enact on the advice of their teachers as they continue to work towards the end of the year.

Subject Selections for 2024

We are at the time of year where preparations are well underway for our 2024 programs and all of our Year 10 and Year 11 students will have received information and the handbooks for choosing their program in 2024. It is vital that all students complete this so that we can accurately create a timetable and blocking of subjects that provides the best access for all students to the subjects that they wish to study. If you have not done so please check out the Year 10  & Year 11 Handbooks and also make sure your child completes their subject selection preferences through our online EdVal system. If you or your child does not have their details or would like support in completing their subject preferences please contact our Careers & Pathways Team.

Stage 3 Build

Our building has progressed well in the past month and you have probably noticed, when visiting the school, we now have an almost fully enclosed building as our extension of the Chirnside Wing continues. We are hopeful to present a small video walkthrough of the space in an upcoming Newsletter! Our Technology Building is almost fully completed with all internal works finished. We are awaiting the delivery of the important woodwork and metalwork machinery that will give our students the ability to learn valuable trade skills. We will be handed the keys to this space at the beginning of Term 4! In our next Newsletter, we will have some pictures of the finished space!
