BOOK WEEK
Read, Grow, Inspire
It is said that “A book is a dream that you hold in your hands” (Neil Gaiman, 2013) and I am very excited to report that this year we ran Book Week from 21-25 August. It was a huge success!
Each year there is a theme, and this year it was Read, Grow, Inspire; which reflects the importance of books and reading.
A Book Week committee was established back in July, which I am proud to have been a part of, and we planned a week full of book-related activities. Soon enough it was Book Week, and some of the fun activities we ran were quiet reading, book reviews, a book-themed dress up day, a fundraising barbecue, book trivia, a writing competition and a massive secondhand book sale. We had lots of books generously donated by families across the school and we even had some old library books donated!
Rooms 10 and 11 were used as the Book Week rooms, which were decorated with fairy lights, bean bags, pillows, bookmark decorating activities and the donated books. Many people came to enjoy the space, and the donated books could be read there and then were able to be purchased on the Friday for $1-$3. Many people purchased a book (*and some people like me bought numerous!), so it was definitely one of the most successful parts of the week.
We also had our Dress Up Day and barbecue on the Wednesday, and we got to see quite a few creative ideas like The BFG and Dobby! There was a bake sale that day too, so plenty of people purchased either a sausage or a cupcake, and all of the money raised from the food and book sales went towards Reading Out of Poverty, a charity which provides opportunities for disadvantaged children.
Another positive part of Book Week was the book reviews - if you found a book that you liked in the book sale, you could write up a review card for it, to help someone who might like to purchase it on the Friday!
On behalf of myself and the Book Week committee, we thank Miss Kilkenny and all the other people who helped make it such an amazing week, and we are looking forward to doing it again next year!
