National Science Week 2023

12 August - 20 August

This year we had a lot of fun celebrating Science week!  Each morning was a Science themed quiz with prizes up for grabs to the first person to correctly answer the question in Home Groups. Science themed music had everyone singing on the way to class each break.

Monday lunchtime gave everyone the opportunity to create a 'Paper Aeroplane'. The winners this year were Jeremy Neuman (Staff) and Dylan Naylor (Year 10).

Wednesday lunchtime students entered into Room 66 ready to solve the puzzles and ESCAPE! A lot of fun was had with batteries, balloon rockets, digestive system simulations and explosion of the soap snake.

Thursday, the Year 9 ADP kids put on a Science spectacular for the Year 7 students. The students did an amazing job coming up with themed based Science and Technology activities for the Year 7’s to participate in.

There was Water Rockets, Sphero Soccer, Bionic Hands, Egg and Spoon Races, Wii Tennis, build your own Golf Club Mini Golf and the very popular VR activities. The 9ADP kids should be congratulated on their leadership through the day!

On Friday to finish off Science Week, we had an Innovation Competition. Jasmine presented to the team her sustainable makeup range and Charlie took out the prize with his axe that generates electricity with every swing!

Thanks to the Year 12 Captains Jaden Dooley and Alissa Cranwell for your leadership of the week!

Special thanks to everyone that helped and got involved!

VCE Biology

Unit 4 Biology excursion to Kiosc at Swinburne University (Wantirna Campus).

Students used real field data from the Duke Lemur centre to investigate relatedness of eight lemurs and determine if a particular species is extinct. Students were able to use Lemur DNA samples in PCR and gel electrophoresis analysis.

This data will be used in the upcoming AOS2 SAC.

Year 11 Physics

Physics students presented their options research projects to Year 8 students and teachers.

A lot of work went into this project and students showed some great understanding of the topics they investigated, answering some tricky questions from the senior Physics teachers.

Australian Titration Challenge

Thursday 7 September

VCE Chemistry students battled it out in the Australian Titration Challenge!

The students had 100 minutes to find the exact concentration of vinegar in 3 samples using titration techniques.

This is an inter school competition, we look forward to finding out the results in Term 4.

Year 9 Forensic Science

Some Forensic Science fun! Pickle Autopsy!! Students in Ms Schulz class needed to conduct an autopsy to conclude how each of their pickles met their demise.

Students investigated blood splatter patterns to see the effects of blood dripping at different heights angles and from weapon impact.

Year 9 Core Science

Year 9 students investigating the structures of the eye by performing a cow's eye dissection.

The Physics of Rock Climbing

Year 9 ADP classes showed resilience and teamwork as they learnt about pulleys, friction and gravity!

A special shout out to Sian, who was the FIRST student to climb 14 meters. Well done!

Year 8 Science

This term, Year 8 Science students have been learning about the Body Systems.  Ms Colyer's class looked at Pluck, which includes the heart, lungs and liver.  Students have looked at the whole system and the structure of each organ under a microscope.
