CBA Book Week

Week 7 was filled with Book Week festivities! Student’s engaged with an author visit, activities in the library, publishing their own story, dressing up in their character costume and sharing their learning with their families.

All the students in the school were lucky enough to attend an author visit by two local authors. Foundation to Year 2 had an author visit from Wendy Orr, writer of many books including Nim’s Island. Wendy used a magical bag for students to guess the object and think of any words they could associate with the object - a technique Wendy described author’s use to help them decide on what may happen to a particular character or at a particular setting. As a group, the students voted on a character, setting and what a problem could be in a text. Using this as a basis, in class students planned and wrote their own story. Check out some of our amazing work from Foundation!

Grades 3-6 engaged in a writer’s workshop with Amelia Mellor. Amelia is the author of The Grandest Bookshop in the World, currently being stuided in class by 5/6C. Amelia shared about her background as an author, read a part of her book to introduce students to character and setting development. Amelia helped students with the planning process using a whole group sentence starter and showed various ways to develop this to make it your own! Back in the classroom students continued and published their own story - 3/4B has shared some of their stories below!

The sun shone for the Book Week parade and it was wonderful to see such a range of book characters on display. It was also lovely to have so many families celebrate. A huge thank you to the school leaders who hosted the afternoon.

Although a fun part of Book Week, dressing up is not the only part of this week. CBA Book Week is about enriching our students lives through exploring Australian stories. Across the term, during weekly library sessions, the students have been exploring many of the CBA short listed texts. These texts explore and celebrate creativity, develop imagination and inspire our students (and adults)! Thank you Mrs Donovan for all your hard work and passion for literature this Book Week!
