From The Classroom
Grade 1/2
The students in Grade 1 and 2 enjoyed a visit from the Toolamba CFA on Monday afternoon. This forms part of the Integrated Studies curriculum and the children are learning about community volunteers.
Grades 3/4
This term, the children have been learning the following in all subject areas.
Reading: The children have been focussing on monitoring and staying engaged in the book they are reading. This way they make a deeper connection with the text and referring too self-monitoring questions to ensure they comprehend the text.
Spelling: All children have focused on learning the following phonemes (u), (ew), (ue), (m) and (r) and thinking of the correct graphemes letters to represent each long sound.
Writing: Limerick and Haiku poems were very popular among the children. It was fun engaging them in reading and building their knowledge around the rules for each poem, as well as, imitating and writing their own rhyming words to suit. This week the children have revisited identifying nouns, verbs and adjectives and adverbs in narrative writing pieces. Handwriting is ongoing and completed on Fridays.
Maths: Multiplication and Shape are the main focus areas. Classroom work has involved children developing their automaticity with number facts. Blitzmaster, Daily 10 Mental Maths Challenge and 99 Maths have been great activities to assist with children improving their fluency skills. In addition, children have been making 3D shapes, labelling the sides, faces and vertices for all pyramids and prisms.
The new URSTRONG program has taken off in full flight with the children developing new skills on how to treat themselves as a best friend. This week the children have been looking into their "sole," selecting a shoe that best represent who they are and placing 5 pictures of interest inside a paper bag.
