Our Tadpole Adventure ...
It all began with a walk to the school Frog Pond where we discovered a squiggle of tadpoles. The children helped each other to spot them. Next, we made a plan to give them a home at preschool but we had to make sure that we could look after them. A big book on frogs and tadpoles helped us to prepare the tank with rainwater, rocks, wood and plants. Next, we had to catch them, and settle them into the water. The children have spent much of Term 3 looking after these creatures. The children excitedly shared any changes with their family and hurried to show their brothers and sisters the tank. This week it was declared that the tadpoles were 'This big!' which led to a group of children using the preschool rulers to measure them as 3cm long. On Tuesday Bilima group observed that the tadpoles had little light green legs. We checked the chart and found that this made them 'froglets'. Gurawara made the same discovery on Wednesday when they arrived for their half day. There has also been much discussion on how big the frogs will be. We will have to keep up our observations as we take care of the froglets so we can announce when they have changed into frogs.
This project has supported the children to understand the life cycle of a frog, to learn to take care of animals and see the link in our Acknowledgment of Country to our daily environmentally friendly practices.
