FOUNDATION

What a fantastic week we have had in Foundation this week! Lots of exciting learning and experiences we have engaged in.

Last week, we welcomed guest speakers Laura and Nina to talk about their expertise in design through fashion and interior design. As inquirers, we used what we found out from the experience to complete our own jumper designs. We used the inspiration from three fabric samples to begin sketching our designs. Then we finalised our designs by colouring in the patterns on our wonderful and creative designs. As curious thinkers, we made great connections to the “Design Cycle” during this learning experience, linking what we learnt from Laura and Nina to the different steps we took to complete our jumpers.

Last Friday was a very special day as the whole school celebrated Father’s Day. The day started with a yummy breakfast in the Hall. It was great to have our dads and grandads join us. Breakfast was followed by an Assembly in the Hall. We all loved seeing the photos of our dads up on the screen. Lastly, our dads came into the Foundation learning spaces. There we were able to play different games such as snakes and ladders, connect four, puzzles and maths card games. The highlight was working with our dads to try and solve the special word find our teachers had created which listed the names of all of the Foundation dads. We hope all dads had a lovely day yesterday celebrating with their families and that they enjoyed the special presents we chose at the Father’s Day stall last Wednesday.

Thank you to Mr. Frazzetto for creating a special movie for the Foundation students during their Book Week dress up day. Enjoy.

This week we look forward to a visit from the fire fighters from Brunswick Fire station. They will be visiting on Tuesday 5th September and Tuesday 12th September as part of a program designed for Foundation students.

Have a wonderful week,

YEAR 1/2

This week in 1/2 has been filled with fun once again, as we prepared to celebrate Father’s Day with our Dads, Grandfathers and other special people.

As thinkers, we generated a list of different adjectives to describe our Fathers and Special People. We had time and opportunity to draw images of them to stick onto the adjectives and create a beautiful piece of art for them to keep. As writers, we wrote heartfelt cards of gratitude and for our Fathers and Special People, describing them. sharing the amazing things they do for us, as well as the reasons why we love them so much.

As mathematicians, we were fortunate enough to engage in some cooking this week. We measured, stirred, poured, mixed and rolled, as we baked delicious chocolate chip cookies as gifts for our Fathers and Special People. As collaborators, we took turns, talked about what we were doing and highlighted the importance of following steps in a recipe. As readers, we unpacked the recipe, as we learnt all about the purpose and features of a procedural text. As thinkers, we identified the goal, the ingredients, the numbered steps and the verbs that explained what we had to do to ensure successful cookies.  The smell of freshly baked cookies travelled throughout our learning spaces all day. Thank you to Ms Gasbarro, our fantastic ESOs Erika and Luca, and to Tommy’s Mum, Simone, for helping us! We hope all of the Fathers and Special People loved their cookies! We have attached the recipe below for your reference, and some photos of the fun we had

A big thankyou to all of the Fathers and Special People who joined us at school Friday morning. We had a wonderful time listening to stories, engaging in games and interacting with one another. As thinkers we have also  been exploring Multiplication in Maths. We have been using a variety of materials to make equal groups and identifying the quickest way  to find the total such as: skip counting, repeated addition and simple multiplication facts. To extend our thinking further we have been looking at different images of arrays in everyday life, for example our cookie trays. We are identifying the arrangements of objects in rows and columns and creating number sentences such as 3 rows of 4 cookies.

We hope everyone had a wonderful Father’s Day with their special people and look forward to the week ahead. We are excited to spend all day Tuesday engaging in Inquiry and constructing our Birdhouse prototypes!

1/2 Team,

Alycia Marsico, Vania Sparano and Vicky Karalis.

YEAR 3/4

We had such a lovely time on Friday celebrating Father's Day with our families. We were grateful to those who came in early to enjoy some delicious food. Thank you to all the Dads who joined us after assembly to engage in some Father's Day activities. We were glad the word search was a hit!

A big thank you again and we hope you had a wonderful weekend in the sunshine!

As mathematical thinkers, we will be exploring division over the coming weeks and the start of next term.

According to the Victorian Curriculum…

  • Year 3 students should be able to recall multiplication facts of two, three, five and ten and their related division facts (eg. 2X5=10 a related division fact would be 105= 2).
  • Year 4 students should be able to recall multiplication facts up to 10 and their related division facts (eg. 7x7=49 / 497=7)
  • Year 4 students will also develop efficient mental and written strategies for multiplication and division where there is no remainder.

As curious inquirers, we have embarked our journey into going further with our inquiry learning, “How can design change lives?”. We have been provided a design brief with a problem to solve. We will then be creating a design solution for an  Animal. We can’t wait to show you our designs!

Assembly

On Friday 8th of September, 3/4BP will be hosting the whole school prayer and assembly. Please join us!

Congratulations to 3/4BZ on presenting the assembly last week.

YEAR 5/6

As we approach the last few weeks of Term, our 5/6 students are working hard to finalise various projects in anticipation for our celebration of learning!

In Literacy, the 5/6 students have been exploring creating a synopsis for the short films they are creating in Inquiry. We began by exploring movies we are familiar with (lots of Disney films!) and reading the synopsis for each. From here we explored how to structure our own piece of writing so that we engage an audience with information about our film without giving too much away. We watched a short clip based on the book “The Story of the Mole Who Knew it Was None of His Business” and each of the students wrote a synopsis in 30 words or less. This was very fun and showcased some of the excellent writers in our learning space.

Here are a few examples:

  • A short, stubby mole suddenly feels something plop on his head, only to find out it was another animal's business! He searches everywhere to find the culprit, can you help him out? - Isabella Joson 5/6OS
  • A small mole shoots out of his hole and finds a surprising thing on his head. He searches for the creature who did it and sets out for revenge!  - Christian Xerri 5/6OS
  • Someone has done their business on the moles head. Will we find out who did it? - Francesco Fazzari 5/6AO

In Numeracy, our students are finalising their dioramas of rooms they have designed using their understanding of area, volume and 3D objects. Students have been working hard on constructing their 3D objects from nets they have drawn and designed themselves. We look forward to showcasing their brilliant designs during our Celebration of Learning next week! We move on now to our next mathematics unit of chance and probability where students will explore various experiments to test out their likelihood.

As Inquirers, the 5/6 filmmakers have been working diligently to finalise the filming stage of their short films. Each group is collaborating to create interesting and engaging films that draw in their audience and demonstrate their drama skills! We are so impressed with the students' engagement in this project as well as witnessing the skills they are learning and developing. Whilst we begin to wind up the filming of our movies, our groups are beginning to use interesting editing techniques to put their masterpieces together. We look forward to sharing our movies with you next term as we plan and put on a Film Festival Event. Stay tuned for details!

On Friday, we welcomed some of the wonderful dads of our 5/6 students into the SLA space. To encourage teamwork and problem solving the students and fathers were tasked with solving the “Mystery of the Kidnapped Billionaire”.  With evidence/clues posted all around the learning space and witness statements and reports to unpack our students and the “Detective Dads” worked together to crack the case. It was so wonderful to see the students and their dads interacting and having some fun. Thank you so much to those who could make it to the breakfast, assembly and activity - You are always welcome to come visit us in the SLA!

We hope everyone enjoyed their sunny weekends and Father's Day celebrations!

Have a fantastic week,

Olivia Sargent, Aoife O’Flynn and Graham Troy
