Maths Incursion

Last week, Prep students participated in a World of Maths incursion where they were required to apply their problem solving skills to navigate a variety of mathematical challenges.

Prep students were joined by Noah from World of Maths who taught us the importance of having a growth mindset when faced with challenges. Students explored measurement, geometry and number concepts throughout the activities and worked together in small groups.

What an exciting experience it was for us all!

School Walking Tour

Last Thursday, prep students were very lucky to be visited by staff alumni and NLPS treasure, Lee Rutledge. Lee worked at NLPS for over 30 years and has seen many changes in the school’s landscape, operations and student demographics.

Over two sessions, Lee met with each of the prep classes and took them on an engaging walking tour of the school grounds. Did you know that many years ago NLPS had only two classrooms and one teacher who taught in one room and lived in the other? We also learnt that further back in time the school grounds were shared with many animals such as cows, chickens and ducks, to name a few!

Our school grounds have changed quite a bit since it was first established, so we wondered ‘what will NLPS look like in 100 years?’ Here are some of our responses:

  • “I think we will have floating classrooms that travel around with us.”
  • “Our teachers will be robots and we won’t need to use pencils.”
  • “Every classroom will have levitating chairs and tables that we can move around easily.”
  • “ I think we will have very tall buildings to fit all the extra kids!”

What do you think our school will look like in 100 years?

Year 2 News

Last week Year 2 students were lucky enough to participate in a circus skills incursion. A great day was had by all, below are some the highlights from the students.

I had the best day at the circus. We did juggling, devil sticks and hula hoops. It was so much fun. By the way, we used balls for juggling and feet for devil sticks.

On Friday, the grade 2s went to see a circus in the Drama room. First, we paired up with someone. My partner was Harper. Then, we did straw blowing with straws. After that, me and Harper held hands and leant back. Last we did hula hoops and juggling.

On Friday, we went to the circus incursion. We learnt how to juggle, how to use diabolos, and my favourite, rock and roll. We learnt about hula hoops, gravity, push, pull and fractions. We learnt about devil sticks too. It was the best day ever.

Year 3 News

Annual Grade 3 Potato Olympics!

This year our events included:

  • The Shotput Bean Bag
  • Gymnastics Beam Walk
  • The Ramp Roll
  • The Spin
  • Weightlifting
  • Diving (James’ favourite)

All students decorated and named their potato athlete and wrote a short Athlete Profile for their competitor. We all enjoyed an afternoon of competitive games and used our maths skills to measure, tally and record our results.

The potato athletes had trained long and hard for this moment. Some performed very strongly while others unfortunately received some injuries.

Well done to all competitors!!

Year 4 News

The Year 4 students were thrilled to be the first in the school to try our new Spheros! 4AD and 4TN tested their coding skills by making their spheros travel the distance of our soccer pitch, race each other, as well as perform some cool tricks, like jumping. We also tried creating obstacles and mazes so we could really test our coding skills. It was so much fun using the strobe and talking functions so that the sphero could change colour and deliver funny messages. We are looking forward to the Robogals visit next week to learn more about coding.

Year 5 News

Dear Year 5 Parents/Carers,

We are in the early stages of creating the Year 6 uniform items for 2024. We understand that there may be students with Neurodiverse sensory issues with the current t-shirt material used, therefore we are looking at the possibility of an alternative for these families. To determine the costs associated with this option we need to gauge the required amount.

If you believe your child would prefer an alternative option, please email the school office no later thanFriday 25th August.

Ordering for the standard Year 6 Jacket & Shirt will be released soon. Please keep an eye out for further information and CompassTix links in the coming weeks.

Drama News

Donations Required

At Newport Lakes, we believe in fostering creativity, self-expression, and teamwork among our students. The Drama Room plays a vital role in this endeavour, as it serves as a space where our young actors and actresses can explore their talents, imagination, and the magical world of storytelling. To ensure that our Drama Room continues to be a thriving hub for creativity, we are initiating a Dress Up Donation Drive.

We are kindly asking for any dress-up clothes, costumes, accessories, or props that your family may have outgrown or no longer use. These items can include everything from fun hats, wigs, and masks to fancy dresses, character outfits, and even classic pieces suitable for various historical or fantasy roles. If you have any dress-up items that you would like to donate, please drop them off at the main office during school hours in the designated collection bag.  We sincerely appreciate your support and involvement in making our Drama Room a vibrant space for our students' creative endeavours. Together, we can nurture a love for the arts and provide our children with an unforgettable experience in their journey through education.

Thank you to the families who have already donated some fabulous costumes! Students are already enjoying them very much.
