Overview of Learning

Year 5 

A warm welcome back to students, parents, and families to Term 2.  We have a wonderful term ahead, including our exciting camp and school dance.  

Our Year 5 students should be proud of how they have approached the challenges and experiences of Senior School. Their hard work throughout last term was evident at the RGLPS Market Day, where they impressed the school community with their creativity and entrepreneurial skills. We look forward to seeing students continue to flourish this term.

English

In Reading, students will be engaging with the novel War Horse to explore how authors use structure, language and perspective to guide readers and shape meaning. They will be learning how the beginning of a sentence or paragraph can highlight key ideas and make texts more cohesive. Students will also be building their vocabulary by identifying precise, technical and topic-specific words used to enhance meaning in both fiction and nonfiction. 

All students will continue to work in a small group each week to target their specific reading needs. They will have the opportunity to have rich discussions about texts, with a focus on higher level thinking such as author’s intent, writing style and characterisation. 

In Writing, students will revise the writing process with a focus on narrative and information text. Students will practise developing their ideas, planning, drafting, revising, and editing their writing for a specific purpose and audience.  There will be an instructional focus on text cohesion, figurative language and use of accurate punctuation.

 In Speaking and Listening, students will revise effective spoken interaction and listening skills. Through discussions and oral presentations, students will focus on developing skills in expressing and justifying their opinions and using questioning and paraphrasing to clarify their thinking. Students will also be making small presentations to the class about their Inquiry investigations.

Maths 

In Number and Algebra, students will explore fractions and percentages. They will order fractions on number lines as well as find common denominators to add and subtract them. Students will investigate percentages by recognising that 100% is the same as one whole and use percentages to compare, describe and represent relative size. They will link percentages to their decimal and fraction equivalents. 

In Applied Mathematics, students will revise telling the time on both analogue and digital clocks as well as compare 12- and 24-hour time. In Measurement, students will learn to choose the correct unit when measuring length, mass and capacity of objects as well as learn to use smaller, more accurate units of measurement (mm, grams, etc.). In Probability, students will conduct chance experiments and list possible outcomes.

Inquiry

In Inquiry, students will learn about different geographical features found around the world and explore how these features were formed, whether through sudden events or changes that took millions of years. They will investigate how rapid geographical changes and extreme weather events can affect the Earth's surface and impact the communities living in those areas.

Students will also learn what natural disasters are, how they are measured, and explore their effects, both locally and globally.

Camp

Our camp is fast approaching, being held this term, on Wednesday 21st May to Friday 23rd May.  We will be going to the Summit Adventure Camp, which aims to provide 'inspiring and life changing experiences through meaningful programs and powerful activities that build self-worth, character, success and happiness'. Please ensure that consent on Compass and the Summit portal has been completed by May 2nd.

Year 6 

Welcome back to school for Term 2! 

We’re thrilled to welcome all our students and families back for Term 2! We hope you had a restful break and are feeling refreshed and ready for an exciting term ahead. This term is packed with fantastic opportunities, including inter school sports and our much-anticipated CYC City Camp! We also welcome back Sarah McLellan in a part-time capacity from family leave. Sarah will be teaching in 6A on Mondays and working in her role as Learning Specialist on her other two working days.

Teaching and Learning Overview 

English

In Reading and Viewing, students will engage with a range of different texts for meaning. They will read by integrating phonic, phonemic and vocabulary knowledge. When demonstrating their understanding of texts, students will explore and compare characters and events and information and ideas from historical, cultural and social contexts to build literal and inferred meaning. They will develop an understanding of how authors utilise text structures and play with language features in purposeful ways.

In Writing, students will explore ideas and experiment with text structures and language features when creating texts. They will investigate how punctuation, grammar and language can be used to elaborate, extend and explain ideas in greater detail. Students will use emotive, vivid vocabulary in their writing and experiment with literary devices. They will practise writing legibly and fluently for sustained periods of time and spell new and technical words using phonic, morphemic and grammatical knowledge. Students will plan, draft and publish informative texts and narrative texts that target a specific purpose and audience. 

In Speaking and Listening, students will plan, rehearse and deliver informal and formal presentations for defined audiences and purposes. When interacting with others, they will use vivid vocabulary, select language to acknowledge formality and use appropriate strategies, such as paraphrasing and questioning. 

Maths 

In Number and Algebra, students will improve their understanding of the place value with decimal numbers and learn to add and subtract decimals. Students will use estimation and rounding to check their answers. They will also solve problems involve addition and subtraction of fractions using their knowledge of equivalent fractions. They will then explore the use of rules that generate visually growing patterns and number patterns involving rational numbers. 

In Applied Mathematics topics (Measurement and Geometry, Statistics and Probability) students will be focusing on measurement and applying their knowledge of decimals to the metric system. They will develop their skills converting between units of length, mass and capacity. Students will explore elapsed time and interpret and use timetables to plan journeys and solve real life-problems.

Year 6 Camp

Camp will be held this term, on Monday 26th of May to Wednesday 28th of May. We will attend CYC City Camp, situated in a fully-refurbished 1910 heritage-listed building in the heart of Melbourne’s CBD. Students will participate in a variety of experiences during their stay. They will become ‘tourists in their own city’ and utilise public transport when navigating the streets of Melbourne. We will be sending out relevant information via Compass shortly and sending students home with a packing list and a permission form for one of the activities. Please keep an eye on Compass to stay up to date.
