Year 3 & 4 

Inquiry

This term, students in Year 3 are exploring the world beneath our feet in our inquiry unit, Beneath Our Feet. Through hands-on science investigations and engaging experiments, students are learning how Earth’s surface changes over time due to natural forces like wind and water, as well as human activities such as mining and farming. They’ll observe soil and rock samples, model landforms like mountains and valleys, and investigate the effects of erosion using water and vegetation.

In addition to science, students will apply design and technology skills to explore how different materials behave and affect the environment. They'll create their own models, maps, and even test mini landforms to better understand landscape changes. With an emphasis on scientific thinking, prediction, observation, and analysis, this unit will deepen students’ understanding of our changing Earth and inspire thoughtful conversations about how we care for the land around us.

Welcome back to Term 2 for our Year 3 Families! 

Welcome back to school for Term Two. We hope you all had a fabulous break and Easter with your families. It has been lovely to see all the students settling back into the school routines in our short first week back at school. We are looking forward to another exciting term of learning.

English

In Reading and Viewing, students will engage in a variety of reading activities, including modelled and independent reading, reciprocal teaching, and book clubs. They will develop comprehension strategies such as questioning, visualising, summarising, and making inferences. Students will read a range of texts, including literary works from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander authors, and make connections between characters’ experiences and their own. They will also learn to identify literary devices, explore text structures, and understand how different texts serve different purposes.

In Writing,students will create narrative, informative, and persuasive texts, using paragraphs to organise their ideas. They will apply phonics, spelling strategies and grammar rules, including verb tense and sentence structure. Writing activities will focus on developing ideas from literary texts, expanding vocabulary, and incorporating multimodal elements. Students will re-read and edit their work to ensure clarity, appropriate structure, and correct punctuation. They will also learn how to use topic-specific and technical vocabulary to enhance their writing.

In Speaking and Listening, students will participate in discussions, practising turn-taking and cooperative communication. They will use interaction skills to contribute to conversations, share ideas, and respond to different topics. Students will explore how language can express emotion and evaluation. When delivering spoken texts, they will focus on voice features to engage an audience. Activities will include oral presentations and opportunities to share their learning using digital or multimodal elements.

Maths 

In Number and Algebra, students will be deepening their understanding of addition and subtraction strategies, with a strong emphasis on partitioning, rearranging, and regrouping numbers. In Weeks 1–5, the focus is on solving problems with two- and three-digit numbers using various methods such as part-part-whole, split strategies, and compensation. Weeks 6–8 transition into exploring the inverse relationship between addition and subtraction to find unknown values in number sentences. The term concludes in Weeks 9–11 with students applying their knowledge of number facts to 20 to efficiently solve problems involving larger numbers. These activities support the development of mental strategies and the use of number properties in both computation and problem solving.

In Applied Mathematics (Measurement, Space, Statistics, Probability), students begin Term 2 with a statistical investigation (Weeks 1–2), learning to collect, record, and interpret categorical and discrete data. In Weeks 3–6, our focus shifts to measurement, where students identify appropriate metric units and use estimation and comparisons for length, mass, and capacity. Location skills are developed in Weeks 7–8 through map reading and creation, including using compass directions and spatial language. The final weeks of the term (Weeks 9–11) we revisit chance, where students describe the likelihood of events using terms like likely, unlikely, certain, and impossible, and begin interpreting results using simple fractions and percentages. These areas aim to build practical mathematical understanding through real-world applications and investigations.

English

In Reading and Viewing, students will compare how authors and illustrators make literary texts exciting, moving, and absorbing, and hold readers’ interest by using plot tension, character, and setting. They will use comprehension strategies such as predicting and summarising to expand topic knowledge and ideas, and begin to evaluate texts to build inferred meanings. Students will expand their vocabulary by exploring a range of synonyms and antonyms, and by using words encountered in a range of sources. They will explore how quoted (direct) and reported (indirect) speech is used. Students will identify common navigation features of digital texts that enhance readability such as headlines, drop-down menus, links, graphics, and layout.

In Writing, students will understand past, present, and future tenses and their impact on meaning in a sentence. They will begin to use complex sentences containing one independent clause and at least one dependent clause, typically joined by a subordinating conjunction, to create relationships such as time and causality. Students will create texts by developing storylines, characters, and settings, and by using language features from literary texts and their own experiences. They will use punctuation signals for dialogue through quotation marks and follow the conventions for the use of capital letters, commas, and boundary punctuation.

Through our spelling program (Spelling Mastery), students will continue to build on their knowledge of spelling patterns and generalisations, as well as strategies to make plausible attempts to spell words using syllables and morphemic knowledge.

With excitement building around ‘pen licences,’ students will have an ongoing focus on developing their handwriting skills. There will be a focus on using clearly formed, joined letters and developing writing fluency and automaticity.

In Speaking and Listening, students will read different types of texts, integrating phonic, semantic, and grammatical knowledge to read accurately and fluently for meaning, re-reading and self-correcting when needed. They will use interaction skills to contribute to conversations and discussions, sharing text- or topic-based information and ideas.

Maths

In Number and Algebra, students will count by multiples of quarters, halves, and thirds, including mixed numerals; and locate and represent these fractions as numbers on number lines. They will solve problems involving multiplying or dividing natural numbers by multiples and powers of 10 without a calculator, using the multiplicative relationship between the place value of digits. Students will develop efficient mental and written strategies and use appropriate digital tools for solving problems involving addition and subtraction. They will also find unknown values in numerical equations involving addition and subtraction.

In Applied Mathematics (Measurement, Space, Statistics, Probability), students will recognise ways of measuring and approximating the perimeter and area of shapes and enclosed spaces, using appropriate formal and informal units. They will use scaled and digital instruments to measure and compare lengths and masses using appropriate units. Students will solve problems involving the duration of time, including situations involving ‘am’ and ‘pm’ and conversions between units of time.
