Overview of Learning

Welcome back to Term 2! 

We're excited to see our students, parents, and families again. We have an exciting term ahead, including a fantastic excursion to Edendale Farm.

English

In Reading and Viewing, students will continue to recognise and read short vowels, common long vowels and consonant digraphs, and consonant blends. Students will explore how types of texts are organised according to their purpose, such as to express an opinion, inform, report and explain. Students will recognise and understand vocabulary across the curriculum, such as topic-specific vocabulary in other learning areas. 

In Writing, students will focus on constructing an informative and a persuasive text. Students will focus working through all phases of the writing process (planning, researching, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing). Students will also continue to develop their ideas in their Writer’s Notebook, engaging in all stages of the writing process.

In Speaking and Listening, students will engage with and respond to literature

discussing a range of literary text. They will share their responses by making connections with their own experiences. 

Maths 

In Number and Algebra, students in Year 1 will continue to build upon the foundations of additive thinking. They will draw upon part-part-whole understanding of numbers to 10 as they explore addition and subtraction within 20. Students in Year 2 will add and subtract numbers within 20, using physical and virtual materials and part-part-whole knowledge to 10. 

In Applied Mathematics (Measurement, Space, Statistics), students will develop their understanding of informal units to measure and compare the length of objects. In Year 1, students will make, compare and classify familiar shapes; recognise familiar shapes and objects in the environment, identifying the similarities and differences between them. In Year 2, students will identify common uses and represent halves, quarters and eighths in relation to shapes, objects and events. 

Inquiry

Throughout our Term Two unit, students will further develop their understanding of the Earth’s natural resources and their uses, such as water, soil and minerals. Students will investigate ways to conserve these natural resources around school and home. Students will consider what may happen if they did not have access to these natural resources.
