Prep Overview of Learning

The Prep staff would like to welcome everybody back to Term Two. We look forward to an exciting, successful term together full of learning, friendship and fun. The classroom teaching staff and room numbers are as follows:

This Term's Learning in Prep

English

English is a component of the Victorian Curriculum which covers the learning areas of reading, writing and speaking and listening.

In Reading and Viewing, students will: 

• connect their own experiences with the texts they read 

• recognise and say the most common sounds for the letters of the alphabet

•recognise and develop awareness of vocabulary used in familiar contexts

•read decodable and authentic texts using developing phonic knowledge

•respond to stories and share feelings and thoughts about the events and characters depicted 

In Writing, students will: 

• draw pictures to show meaning 

• develop the understanding that spoken sounds and words can be written down 

• begin developing appropriate written formation of upper and lower case letters

• use comprehension strategies, such as visualising, predicting, connecting, summarising and questioning, to understand and discuss texts listened to, viewed or read independently

• recognise that sentences are key units for expressing ideas

In Speaking and Listening, students will learn to: 

• discuss experiences that are similar or different to their own 

• listen to and respond appropriately to others 

• share about events that have happened to them with their classmates and peers

• interact in informal and structured situations, using appropriate voice levels and listening while others read or speak 

Mathematics

Mathematics is a component of the Victorian Curriculum which covers the learning areas of Number and Algebra, Measurement, Space and Statistics.

In Number and Algebra, students will learn to: 

 • name, represent and order numbers, including zero to at least 20, using physical and virtual materials and numerals

 • partition and combine collections up to 10 using part-part-whole relationships and subitising to recognise and name the parts

• count groups of objects and compare and order their size 

• sort familiar objects into groups and explain their reasons for their groupings

In Applied Mathematics (Measurement, Space, Statistics), students will learn to: 

 • compare objects including length and duration

• sequence days of the week and times of the day

• recognise, describe, sort & create familiar shapes

Inquiry

In Term Two, Prep students will complete a unit on ‘What's The Matter?’. They will become scientists by asking and responding to questions when participating in simple chemistry experiments. This unit covers learning areas from the curriculum areas of Science (Chemical, Physics) and Design and Digital Technologies. 

The key questions that students will explore are: 

• What is an experiment?
• What are some different materials we can use?
• What happens when the materials are mixed together?
