Learning over the holidays.

Students will often learn at different rates. This difference in learning can be a result of a number of factors, one of which can be the impact of what we call the “forgetting curve”.

This is something students or even adults encounter when they have learnt a new skill and feel as though they “know it” however if we don’t use the skill for a while we can lose the information and sometimes even need to relearn it.

The key to students not losing their learning is ongoing repeated practise at the time of learning and then later interval practise every few weeks. This supports students to make stronger connections in their brains that allow them to find and apply the skill automatically at a later date.

This loss of learning can often occur over holidays or long breaks from school. The key to students retaining their learning over a brak is to ensure they continue to practise some of the skills they have been learning over the term. To ensure your children continue to practise and embed their learning teachers are sending home some ideas for short activities students can engage in over the holidays. They have also put a number of activities on our Home Learning Portal for you to access.

Over the Easter holidays, we ask that students continue to read each night and if possible, they continue to practise their basic number skills. This will support them to retain the skills they have been learning in term one and to continue to build on these next term.
