A message from the Principal

Reflecting on a Remarkable Term 1

As we reach the end of Term 1, I am filled with pride and gratitude for the incredible journey we've embarked upon together. This term has been a testament to our school's vibrant spirit, commitment to excellence, and the strong bonds that unite our community.

Highlights of Term 1:

  • Year 5/6 Camp: Our senior students embarked on an unforgettable adventure, delving into history at Sovereign Hill and embracing challenges that fostered resilience and camaraderie.
  • THE LUME Excursion: Thanks to a generous donation from a SKiPPS family, every class immersed themselves in the 'Van Gogh Reimagined' exhibition, experiencing art in a captivating, interactive setting.
  • Jazz in the Park: Our annual start of year celebration was better than ever with live music, delicious food and drinks and a friendly relaxed way for our community to connect.
  • Sustainable Scarecrow Achievement: Our school's creativity shone brightly as we clinched first place in the sustainable scarecrow competition at the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show with our entry, Circe.
  • Harmony Day Celebrations: Despite a few weather-related setbacks, the amazing performances, activities and sharing of learning, highlighted the unity and cultural richness of our community.

Advancements in Teaching and Learning:

This term, we've implemented significant enhancements to our educational approach:

  • Explicit Instruction: By adopting a more direct teaching methodology, we've ensured clarity and effectiveness in our lessons, leading to improved student comprehension and engagement.
  • Single Year Level Classes: Transitioning to single year level grades has allowed for more tailored instruction, addressing the specific needs of each cohort and fostering a cohesive learning environment.
  • PhOrMeS Program: The introduction of our new spelling and reading program, PhOrMeS, has enriched our literacy curriculum, and we're already witnessing positive outcomes in student proficiency.

As we approach the Easter break, I encourage everyone to take this time to rest, reflect, and rejuvenate.

May your holidays be filled with joy and relaxation.

While the school term in ending, the hard work and activity at SKiPPS will continue. As well as our Team Kids holiday program, the break will also see our Art Room and Kitchen Dining Room renovations be completed, meaning we will be back in these spaces (with all shipping containers gone) at the start of term.

We are also constructing walls in our Year 2 and Year 3 classrooms over the break to help reduce noise and distraction in these more 'open-plan' spaces and so increase the ability for students to pay attention and make progress in their learning.

The start of term will also see our new 'DreamCourts' surface installed in front of our two stand alone basketball hoops, finally completing the basketball court works that were made possible by such generous fundraising in 2023 and 2024.

We eagerly anticipate welcoming all families back on Tuesday, 22nd April, ready to embark on an equally dynamic and rewarding Term 2.

Warm regards,

Neil Scott
