In our classrooms in Week 9 and Week 10

Literacy

We have now finished the text 'The Wild Robot', and students have nearly finished their science fiction narratives. The book had a few surprise twists and turns which students have been trying to emulate in their own writing. Hopefully by the end of Week 10, all students will have a fully published story that they can show off and be proud of.

We have finished our class novel Boy Overboard and students are now writing up their own review of the text. Students are analysing several elements of the text including their own enjoyment, ongoing themes and the author's language choices.

Mathematics

Students are working on personal learning goals that have been identified in their recent assesments. For each identified area of misunderstanding, students are asked to work through the concept and then complete tasks based around that concept. Students are then able to celebrate their learning as the list of understood concepts grow.

Topic

This week students began their final project for our Consumerism studies. In pairs, students have come up with an idea for a product that could be in a can. They are now designing logos and labels for their product. Over the next 2 weeks, these groups will create advertising material for these products including a poster, a radio ad and a TV advertisment.

STEAM

Most Grade 5s have now completed their base Robots, and are learning the complexities of coding to control those robots to drive a specific track. Some of our more advanced coders are moving on to some of the other models. Our Grade 6s are focussing more on preparation for their graduation and will revisit Digital Design when time permits.

Graduation

Our Grade 6 Graduation is rapidly approaching. Students will return to school at 5.30pm for dinner before their graduation ceremony. Parents and other special guests are asked to arrive after 7pm for a 7.30pm start time. The ceremony will be held in the Hub at school on Wednesday 18th of December. We ask that no students be at school before 5pm. Students will enter the Grade 5/6 building through Mrs Byron's classroom.

The Grade 6 students are working on writing speeches for the evening and have been enjoying reliving memories from the last 7 years of their schooling. We are also excited to begin working on a musical performance for the evening with an enthusiastic band of instrumental performers and singers. Lyrics are available for students to access in our Google Classroom, so that they can practise at home too.

Swimming Program

The Grade 5/6 swimming program will be running in Week 9, from the 2nd to the 6th of December. Please send the following items labelled with your child's nameto avoid items becoming lost:

  • Thongs/Slides (to wear on the way to the pool and back - NOT to be worn to school)
  • Towel
  • Bathers (worn to school under uniform)
  • Goggles (if required)
  • A separate bag to carry items to and from the pool (reminder that they will have wet bathers and a towel in this bag)
  • Underwear

2025 School Leaders

With the end of the school year approaching fast, the process for selecting our 2025 student leaders will begin shortly. All Grade 5 students have been working on a letter of application for a leadership role over the last 2 weeks, which are due on Monday next week (2/12/24). We are focussing on recognising our personal qualities and skills and how to write a more formal letter. Students who are interested in becoming a House Captain have been supported to modify their letter into a speech, that will be presented to their house in a house rally before student voting takes place on Monday afternoon.

We wish all our Grade 5s good luck in this selection process and encourage them all to apply. We are always incredibly proud of our Grade 5 students who are brave enough to step up for the challenge and responsibility of a leadership role.
