Extension opportunity for 2025 Year 12 students

Opportunity to study a first year uni subject in Year 12

Are you currently enrolled in Year 11 and are doing a Year 12 advancement? This pathway may be for you!  The Centre for Higher Education Studies (CHES) offer a selection of early University entry as a further extension for students at NHS. Go beyond year 12 by studying a first-year uni subject as part of your final year of VCE.

What is involved?

Students can enrol in a HES program and do two semester-long subjects (over one year) of a first-year University subject instead of one of their Year 12 VCE subjects.

Subjects are limited to the options on offer so see the attached flyer or below for further information. Currently we have students enrolled in a 1st Year Law subject with Latrobe University and in Mathematics at the University of Melbourne and we are happy to have a chat with any interested students about what may be involved.  There are some recorded FAQ sessions on their site also if you wish to find further information.

How to apply:

The first step for an application is for interested students to come visit me and have a chat.

Enrolment applications are due to CHES by 30 August and will have some prerequisites to apply. Applying does require school approval so if you/your student is interested we want to have a chat. Students or families can email me (the one approves applications) or students can come visit me in the Senior School office to discuss if they think they are a suitable candidate and need more information.

Further info re the program from CHES:

To extend high-achieving government school students, we offer early-access to university subjects to students across Victoria through online (and on-site) learning options. These HES subjects enable students to earn an ATAR contribution and potential university credits. Students can incorporate one Higher Education Study into their overall VCE program at your school and there is no cost to the students (or your school).
