Weekly Gospel Reflection

Matthew 21:28-32

Which of the two sons did the Father's will?

In this week’s Gospel, Jesus provides the chief priests with a parable. He says that a man has two sons. The first is asked to go to the vineyard to work, but the boy initially refuses. Later, however, he reflects on his decision and instead goes and works. The second son says that he would go but does not go. Jesus asks the question – which of the two did the Father’s will? Jesus continues, saying the first son did His will. Finally, He explains its meaning further, saying that even people who may have done the wrong things but repent will enter heaven before those who know better.

How often in our daily lives do we encounter people who say they will do something but don't?  There is perhaps nothing more frustrating than relying on people who do not follow through or even break promises.

This week, we are challenged to do what we say and say what we do. Furthermore, this week’s Scripture also asks us to stop and reflect on our actions. Sometimes we may, at first glance, refuse to help someone else or not feel that it is "our problem"; however, Jesus encourages us to pause for a moment to consider our options and hopefully make the right choice. This week’s reading is also an insight into Jesus’ thinking – it doesn't matter how we get there, as long as we make the right choice in the end.

Throughout the week, we are called to think carefully about the choices we make. Are we people who others can trust? Are we people that can be relied upon to follow through? Would other people be able to trust us to do the right thing?

Dear Father,

Thank you that you journey with us on our pilgrimage through life.

Lord, there are so many stormy paths, rocky climbs and shifting seasons and life can take many twists and turns. Yet you have promised us that you go with us, and that your Holy Spirit is within each of us, guiding our thoughts, words and actions.

Father, we come to you with the decisions we face right now, we lay out before you the different aspects, the possibilities and our fears and concerns.

Help us to have wisdom in our minds and hope in hearts. Come guide us and inspire us as we seek to choose the right decision.

Thank you that whichever way we go, your love always remains with us.
