Do you remember for our frog pond revamp, Lyn from Sunbury Bunnings donated a great pond that is deeper, so that the water will remain cooler with less chance of evaporating over summer.
This was installed at the working bee on Saturday.
The cross-section drawings below explain the process that was undertaken. The current (now former) pond had a shallow base, getting very hot over summer and prone to evaporation, it wasn't attractive to tadpoles. The improvements with the deeper pond, surrounded by a bog that have just taken place, allow the frogs a much deeper pool for some relief from evaporation and a place for tadpoles to live.
The bog section is now absorbing water and remaining boggy.
This will improve even further over time.
Under this area, it was discovered that there were a number of drainage pipes. This meant that the pond/frog bog had to work around them. Well done to parents James Walsh and Tom Barnes who had the complex job of pulling this off!
Now all we have to do is plant some more native vegetation around the pond and a couple of advanced trees to provide summer shade.
