Writing

In the beginning of Term 3, students will be planning and writing an information report about the impact of the First Fleet on Australian history in connection to reading Tom Appleby: Convict Boy. They will continue to refine their skills in note taking, use of technical terminology and structuring paragraphs using the Single Paragraph Outline (SPO). A focus on appositives and adverbial clauses will support students in adding description to where, when and how events occurred during this period.
As part of reading The Grandest Bookshop in the World, students will be planning and writing a narrative piece of their choosing. The impact of figurative language will be highlighted in creating rich fictional settings and characters, as well as continuing to develop our use of ‘show don’t tell’ in descriptions.
Students will also progressively identify how text features in their information reports and narratives differ and will connect this to the different purposes of the text types. This will also be consolidated during writing lessons at the sentence level to support understanding of appropriate choices for different formats.
Handwriting and typing skills will continue to develop throughout literacy sessions where students will have the opportunity to produce pieces in both handwritten and typed formats. They will also continue to add to their understanding of different spelling patterns by exploring the linguistic roots of base words, prefixes and suffixes.
