The Year 7 High Achievers Lunch was a wonderful opportunity to recognise and celebrate the hard work and dedication of our students. Those who consistently demonstrated excellent effort throughout this term were congratulated on their achievements and enjoyed a well deserved pizza lunch together. It was a fantastic way to acknowledge their commitment to learning and encourage them to continue striving for success.

7K are a vibrant group of students, pictured here with their teacher Ms Ruth.

7K are focusing on persuasive text for their upcoming assessment. They recently submitted excellent work for their study of the writer Margaret Wild where we analysed both characterisation and themes in ‘Fox’ and ‘The Feather.’ Their general knowledge, vocabulary skills and understanding of current events is being extended through online games such as Wordle and Contexto and the development of oral language skills through discussion and analysis of current issues through BTN High. I am very pleased with the way in which the class has settled into secondary school and have adopted and demonstrated the values of Bairnsdale Secondary College.

In PE this term, 7K students are focusing on team sports. The students participated in a variety of fun and engaging team games that focused on developing cooperation, teamwork, and positive social skills. Through activities such as Capture the Flag, Ultimate Frisbee, Boot Ball, Freeway, Ga Ga Ball, and Rats & Rabbits, students practiced communicating effectively, working collaboratively, and supporting their peers. These games encouraged active participation, resilience, and respectful interactions, helping students build confidence and strengthen relationships while demonstrating the importance of working co-operatively with others.

Over the past few weeks, 7K students have been working hard in Mathematics and developing their confidence across a range of topics. Students have been learning how to calculate the area of simple shapes and composite shapes, explore volume calculations, and convert between different units of measurement. They have also begun building their foundation in statistics, including calculating the mean, median, mode and range.
One of the highlights of teaching 7K this term has been seeing students become more willing to attempt challenging questions, explain their thinking, and support each other in class. I have also really enjoyed building positive relationships with many students, which has helped create a more encouraging and respectful learning environment.
I am proud of the effort 7K students have shown in completing their learning tasks and continuing to improve their mathematical skills. It has been great to see their confidence grow throughout the term, and I look forward to supporting their learning further next term.

Students been busy designing and building their own wooden pencil cases. They learned to safely use a range of hand and power tools, including saws, hammers, chisels, drills and sanders. Students also used the laser engraver to personalise their projects with unique designs. As part of the project, students explored different types of timber, joints, finishing techniques and the importance of sustainable forestry in Victoria. The finished pencil cases are a credit to the hard work and creativity of the class. Well done, 7K!
Check out the photos below of students proudly showing off their completed projects.

7K recently wrapped up their History and Geography curriculum with a captivating unit on Ancient Egypt. Students explored when and where this civilization lived, the importance of the Nile River, the social hierarchy, and the power of the Pharaohs. They also looked at everyday life, noting that water was just as valuable a commodity then as it is now. The unit concluded with a fascinating look into Tutankhamun and the 1920s discovery of his tomb.
Students recently completed their final Common Assessment Task (CAT). Most achieved strong results through excellent focus and application.
To celebrate the end of the semester, the class followed a precise recipe to "mummify" tomatoes using a special preserving powder. Students are excited to check on the progress of their experiment and reveal the results after the holidays!

In Art, 7K students are exploring the work of Henri Rousseau. Using oil pastels, they are creating detailed forest close-up artworks inspired by Rousseau’s lush jungle scenes. Students are focusing on colour, texture, and layering techniques to bring their vibrant nature studies to life.

While Lisa is on leave, please join us in welcoming Shawna to the Year 7 space! Shawna will be the friendly face at the Year 7 Hub administration desk, ready to assist students with their everyday needs and provide support throughout the day.
The Year 7 Hub would like to wish everyone a safe and happy holidays! We would like to congratulate everyone on an amazing semester, and we will see you next term!
