Grade 5/6

Welcome to Term 3!

What a fabulous few weeks we have had in Grade 5/6, starting the term off with the excitement of camp last week! Students approached camp with enthusiasm and excitement and should be commended for their positive attitude. So many highlights occurred, including role playing as gold miners, police and bankers (even the wet weather did not dampen the Grade 5/6's spirits!), going on the Red Hill Mine Tour, panning for gold, watching the AURA Sound and Light show, dipping candles, watching a lolly making demonstration and, of course, buying lots of lollies from the giftshops! Although there were many tired students the next day, everybody had a blast! Thank you to the Grade 5/6s for representing George Street so beautifully, and a massive thank you to Mrs G, Mr Barker, Megan and Ashlee for coming along and allowing this camp to run!

Back in class, students had begun exploring life in the 1800s prior to our trip to Sovereign Hill. Within English, we have started our whole class text, 'Rivet Boy', which centres around the main character John, who has to become the breadwinner for his family at the age of 12. Students have enjoyed learning about the differences between now and then, and we have continued to build upon our sentence level writing and vocabulary knowledge through our new text. Within History, we have been learning about the establishment of British colonies in Australia, the Gold Rush and the Eureka Stockade. Watching the AURA Sound and Light Show at Sovereign Hill really helped paint a picture of these events for our students!

Within Mathematics, we have been exploring time. Students have practised telling the time, correctly using the language of 'to' and 'past', converting between 12- and 24-hour time, and calculating elapsed time. Making schedules and timetables for camp was also one of our time activities, which linked into our Sovereign Hill trip! At home, it would be wonderful if you could support your child's learning by please encouraging your child to tell the time regularly, and convert the time to 24-hour form.

Thank you to the Grade 5/6s for a fantastic start of Term 3, I am looking forward to a fun-filled last semester of learning with them!
