Principal Update

Melissa Mackenzie

We have had another productive week at APS with many programs winding up for the term.

The Year 5 and 6 students have had the Life Education team come in and teach them about puberty and becoming a teenager. The Year 1’s took public transport to the Aquarium last week which was a great adventure for them and the staff and parents who accompanied them. Thank you to all our parent volunteers this term who have continued to support our excursions and events.

The staff have finished writing their reports and they are in the process of being proof-read and edited.

The new reports reflect the shift to Victorian Curriculum 2.0 which has happened in Maths and English and will happen in the other areas over this year and next. As you may have read in previous newsletters we have spent considerable time constructing a report that is informative for parents, easy to read and understand, complements the learning that happens in classrooms and gives teachers an opportunity to assess and comment on the learning that has happened over the semester.

The Effort and Behaviour section is the part I would like to take some time to explain today. The key to descriptions have been carefully chosen and will enable teachers to make judgements against these. Please take the time to read these. We have been talking about effort at assembly over the past few weeks and explaining that to achieve things there is effort required. Most students come to school ready to put in the effort required to do their best learning. The same applies to behaviour. Most students are able to choose behaviours that enable them to concentrate and focus, putting their attention to the learning at hand. You will notice in both areas that students who are ‘Needs Attention’ are requiring adult input to help them be their best. This can take many forms and would involve teachers and parents discussing what is needed at school. The semester report will be published on Compass next Friday 27 June.

Excellent - This student is always engaged and enthusiastic only requiring reminders on very rare occasions. They demonstrate a willingness to participate in all activities, clearly striving to achieve their best and always demonstrate the APS learner dispositions as expected. This student is achieving what is expected of them based on all available evidence.

Good - This student is consistently engaged and generally enthusiastic only requiring reminders on occasions. They demonstrate a willingness to participate in all activities and complete set tasks on most occasions, they mostly demonstrate the APS learner dispositions as expected. This student is achieving what is expected of them based on all available evidence.

Satisfactory - This student usually engages in lessons but requires regular reminders to participate appropriately and complete set tasks at their ability level. They usually demonstrate appropriate learner dispositions as expected at APS. This student may not be achieving what is expected of them based on all available evidence.

Needs Attention - This student engages in some lessons but requires frequent reminders to participate appropriately and they often do not complete set tasks at their ability level. They need regular support to demonstrate the APS learner dispositions. This student is not achieving what is expected of them based on all available evidence.

Satisfactory - This student requires some reminders and verbal warnings to display the school rights and does not consistently demonstrate the values of an Alphington student. Their behaviour is variable depending on classes, teachers, aides, visiting staff and community members. They often need reminding about their behaviour choices towards others. This student may have had some behaviour incidents which have been discussed with parents.

Their behaviour is variable depending on classes, teachers, aides, visiting staff and community members. They need reminding about their behaviour choices towards others. This student has had a number of notable behaviour incidents which have been discussed with parents. There are supports in place for this student which may include a behaviour plan.

I hope this helps when reading your children's report.

Have a lovely week

Kind Regards
