Milo's Birthday Surprise

The Prep children have been busy learning the sounds and letters of the alphabet through the story, 'Milo's Birthday Surprise'. Learning the sounds of the alphabet (phonemes) and linking them to written letters (graphemes) are the first steps in learning to read. The children have successfully completed 'Milo's Birthday Surprise' and yesterday they celebrated the story by dressing up as one of Milo's animal friends. The Preps celebrated Milo's birthday with the party food that was mentioned in the story.

Firefighter Visit

The Preps excitedly welcomed back the Hawthorn Station firefighters and their fire truck last Thursday. Before they had the chance to experience the water hose, they learnt that if we ever come into contact with fire, it is important to cover our faces, drop and roll.

Year 1 News

On Tuesday, the Year 1's participated in an incursion facilitated by Butterfly Adventures. As part of their Term 2 Inquiry Unit about life cycles, the students learnt about the life cycle of a butterfly and the different parts of a butterfly.

Year 2 News

As part of their Book Study this term, the Year 2 students have been reading Roald Dahl's, 'George's Marvellous Medicine.' This story has enabled the students to engage in writing opportunities with both narrative and procedural genres. It also integrated the Inquiry topic of mixtures, related to chemical science. The students have been working on their own potion, following the format of a procedure. On Tuesday afternoon, all classes and Year 2 families were invited into the classroom to read the different potions.

Prep-2 Visual Art Incursion

Next term, we are excited to welcome Dawn Tan, a Singapore-born artist and educator based in Melbourne. Dawn is known for her signature watercolour food artworks, custom house portraits, and collaborations with leading galleries, brands, and publications. She runs The Little Art Yurt and The Little Art Yurt Club, offering creative classes and online programs that inspire children and families to explore process art.

During the workshop, students will paint their favourite dinner. We would appreciate it if over the holidays you could help your child take a bird’s-eye view photo of their favourite meal. If possible, print it at A4 size and bring it to school in the first week back. If printing isn’t possible, please email the photo to admin@shkew.catholic.edu.au and ensure the photo's title includes your child's name.

Please see the attached examples for guidance. Thank you for your support!

Have a wonderful holiday.
