Grade 2
Botanic Gardens Excursion
Last week, the Grade 2 students had the wonderful opportunity to visit the Cranbourne Botanical Gardens as part of our learning about Indigenous cultures. The students were full of curiosity and enthusiasm as they explored the native bushland and learned about the deep connections Aboriginal people have with the land.
One of the highlights of the day was spotting wallabies hiding in the bushland grasses and watching the ducks swimming across the lake.
We were also lucky enough to experience the tastes and smells of native bush foods. Students sipped on lemon myrtle tea with some students also getting to taste sour finger limes and a refreshing bush mint leaf. Many of these flavours were new and exciting for the students, sparking lots of discussion!
During our activity workshops, we learned about some of the traditional Aboriginal tools used for hunting, making fire, and keeping warm. Students listened respectfully, asked thoughtful questions, and enjoyed the chance to touch real possum and kangaroo furs.
Students also had the opportunity to create their own paint using ochre and water. Using this natural paint, students decorated a rock mural with their handprints, and some even had their faces painted with traditional symbols.
It was a fun and fascinating day, full of learning, nature, and new experiences!
