Is It Motivation or Mental Load?

If your teen seems unmotivated or constantly overwhelmed, it might not be a lack of willpower; it could be mental load. Between study, sport, part-time jobs, friendships, family expectations and social media, today’s teens are carrying a lot in their heads. When the mental load becomes too heavy, it can look like avoidance, procrastination or burnout.

How can parents help? Start by helping your teen see what they’re carrying—making a list of current commitments can be eye-opening. Then work together to prioritise, simplify where possible and build in true downtime (not just more screen time). Encourage regular breaks, sleep, movement and self-care. Remember, teaching teens how to balance life now gives them vital skills they’ll need for the future.
