STEM - RMIT

Ms Perri Graves, STEM teacher

This term several Year 9 and 10 female students have taken part in the future STEM leaders program in partnership with RMIT staff and students. This program supported student’s growth and development of leadership skills by enabling them to deliver a practical STEM workshop to Year 7 students.

The future STEM leaders firstly went on an excursion to RMIT University City campus where they were split into groups to research and deliver presentations on a STEM superstar, then they delivered a presentation on a topic of their choice. These all aimed to develop their public speaking skills. Then they took part in the workshop that they would later run for Year 7 students, to familiarise themselves with the practical activities and the scientific explanations behind them.

A few weeks later they then delivered the workshop to both Year 7 classes. The students did a fantastic job, all of the year 7 students thoroughly enjoyed the activities they led including alka seltzer rockets, looking at emulsions and testing for Vitamin C in fruit juices. It was wonderful to see the future STEM leaders build in confidence throughout the sessions they ran and show great leadership skills. The students were then presented with a certificate and gift bag from the RMIT team.
