From 10 December 2025, social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok, X and YouTube will be required to take reasonable steps to prevent Australians under 16 from creating or keeping accounts. The aim is to protect young people from online risks such as exposure to harmful content, cyberbullying, privacy concerns and the addictive design of these platforms. While these changes target the platforms themselves rather than penalising children or parents, they will affect how young people under 16 access and use social media.
For families, this is an opportunity to talk openly about safe and balanced social media use. Younger teens may feel worried about losing contact with friends, so parents can help by setting boundaries together, encouraging offline activities, and teaching digital skills like critical thinking and privacy awareness. It’s also important to check in on your child’s wellbeing, as social media use can be linked with stress and anxiety. Supporting your teen through these changes will help them navigate the online world with greater resilience and confidence.
