Youth Advisory Council Appointment
Written by Liam Cruzana (Year 11)
Recently, I was appointed by the Minister for Youth, Senator the Hon Dr Jess Walsh to join the Australian Government’s Youth Advisory Council for a Safer Australia and attend an in-person meeting in Canberra along with 15 other people from around Australia.
Youth Advisory Councils like this one are part of a wider government initiative to ensure that the youth voice is considered when formulating policy, to ensure that their decisions reflect the future generation of Australia. This council is an important initiative from the government as part of their “A Safer Australia”, which aims to provide the government with advice to help reduce the increasing rates of radicalisation of the youth. In this council, I hope to represent my peers here at the College to the best of my ability. While I was in Canberra, I travelled to Parliament House, where I had the opportunity to meet with high-profile ministers such as the Minister for Home Affairs, the Hon Tony Burke MP, Minister for Youth, Senator the Hon Dr Jess Walsh, and the Minister for Multicultural Affairs, the Hon Dr Anne Aly MP.This was an insightful trip, and I cannot wait to see the amazing things the Council does in the future!
I would also like to highlight Step Together, an important resource from the Government to educate yourself on violent extremism, and the National Youth Survey, a quick 10 minute survey created by the Office for Youth which helps the government better understand the issues most important for people aged 12-25. I highly recommend people to fill out this survey as this feedback goes directly to the Government.
