Discovering the Art of Paul Klee in German Lessons

This term, students in Years 3–6 are exploring the fascinating world of Swiss artist Paul Klee — but they’re doing it in German! Klee was a famous painter who loved to experiment with colour, shape, and imagination. Born in Switzerland in 1879, he created hundreds of artworks that often look like colourful puzzles, dreamlike cities, or playful patterns made from geometric shapes such as triangles, squares, and circles.

Because Klee himself was Swiss and spoke German, his work is a perfect way for our students to learn new German vocabulary. In their German lessons this term, students are learning how to describe Klee’s art using German words for shapes (Formen) and colours (Farben). They are practising sentences such as Mein Kunstwerk hat drei Vierecke in der Farbe Rot (My artwork has three quadrilaterals in the colour red) and Das ist ein Quadrat in der Farbe hellblau (That is a square in the colour light blue) as they talk about and create their own designs.

Inspired by Klee’s colourful and creative style, students are also making their own Paul Klee–inspired artworks and labelling them in German. It’s a fun and engaging way to connect language learning with art, helping students see how creativity and culture come together through the inspiring work of Paul Klee.
