Junior School

Year 1

We’ve been having such a fun and busy time in Year 1 – there’s always something new to learn and discover!

In Maths, we've been exploring sharing and multiplication, using hands-on activities to help us understand how numbers can be grouped and divided.

The children have really enjoyed working together, helping each other, and making connections in fun and practical ways. One of our favourite parts of the day is reading time. The children have been choosing their own books from the Library, and it’s such a joy to see them curled up with a story they’ve picked themselves.

We’ve also just finished reading our class novel, Milly Molly Mandy. We all loved her little adventures and the way she cares for her family and friends – such lovely reminders of how we can show love and care in our own lives too.

Year 2

In Science this term, we are exploring Night and Day! Last week we were investigating the relative sizes of the Sun and Moon. Students engaged in a little task with different sized balls to show how the Sun and Moon can look the same size from Earth, but are instead different distances from the Earth.

We've also looked at descriptive writing this week. The Year 2s listened to the story, 'A Bad Case of Stripes' and wrote down different descriptions that they heard. Later, students had to complete a drawing of the main character, using only the descriptions they heard in the story before finally being able to view the pictures in the story too!

Year 3

It’s been a busy start to the term in Year 3!

We have begun learning about rocks & soil in our science lessons and this has included looking closely at different soil samples with microscopes and magnifying glasses and seeing exactly what is in soil.

Mrs Robinson came down to Year 3 and took us outside to teach us about how to plant good quality plants and vegetables. We have set up an experiment where we have planted some snap pea seeds in four different types of soil - sand, potting mix, gravel and a sand/soil mixture. We are observing these over the next few weeks to determine which type of soil produces the healthiest plant.

We’ve also started looking at rocks - how they are formed and how to classify them. We had a great afternoon using our magnifying glasses and microscopes to look at many different types of rocks and gems very closely.

In Maths, we have been learning about 3D shapes and investigating their properties. We’ve had fun making nets and also creating 3D shapes with stick and plasticine.

On Tuesday, twelve of our Year 3 students proudly represented King’s College in the Lion’s Club Public Speaking Competition. To say I was proud of them is an understatement - blown away would be a much better description!

It was an incredibly inspiring morning as these young students took to the stage in the auditorium and delivered speeches they had worked so hard on, both at school and at home. Each child showed wonderful courage, preparation, and enthusiasm.

Our very deserving Year 3 winners were Luke W and Arto B, who both delivered outstanding performances. However, every single student did a magnificent job and should feel extremely proud of their efforts.

Year 4

This week, many of the Year 4 students participated in the Lion's Club Speeches competition. There were plenty of nerves beforehand, but every student who participated spoke so well and we were so proud of you!

They shared on the topic of what invention they would like to create, and there were many funny, creative and helpful ideas shared.

Thank you to the Lion's Club representatives who were present, and a special well done to Claire, Alina, Olivia, George, Rebecca P, Maeve, Rebecca A, Bronte, Alyra, Edie and Luke who all spoke so beautifully.

Year 4/5

In the last two weeks, Year 4/5 have done a lot of exciting things in the classroom.

They have started their Science unit on light and been in the Senior Science lab experimenting with the light boxes.

While some of the class were away at Cricket, the rest of the class did a STEM project about Bicycles to tie in with starting Bike Education this term.

There were also some wonderful speeches delivered for the Lions Club Speech Competition this week, with Shivansh coming runner up for Year 5 and Grace coming in first place for Year 5, progressing onto the next round. I am very proud of all that participated - well done!

Year 6

In Year 6 we get to experience a few subjects that are a bit different to the rest of Junior School. Two of those are Woodwork and Food Tech which come under the banner of Design Tech. Half the class at a time does each subject for a semester and then we swap subjects for the second semester.

Mrs Jellie teaches Woodwork and Mrs Robinson teaches Food Tech. Before we start each class we have lessons on safety in the area we are working in to make sure we know how to safely and properly operate all the tools and equipment we are using.

In Woodwork, we have made a Som Cube and we are currently constructing a wooden box.

In Food Tech, we have been making foods from around the world and this week we are making hamburgers.

We love that in Year 6 we get to have some very special and unique experiences.
