Today marked four weeks of the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden program for 3/4K.  They have eagerly embraced the jobs in the garden by shovelling new soil  into the gardens, weeding and planting new vegetable seedlings. Today we planted eggplant, zucchini, corn, rosemary, mint, basil and marigolds to help naturally keep the insects away.  We enjoyed the sunshine the morning provided and we were kept busy with everything that we needed to get done.

After snack time, the students entered the kitchen in preparation for two hours of cooking and then eating.  This week our main meal was a delicious zucchini slice.  The salad was a bean and tomato mix with fresh lettuce from the garden added into it.  Our dip was a yummy and creamy Bush Tomato Dip. While the bread (Moist Apple Cakes) served as a dessert after cleaning up.  So many yummy flavours to taste and explore.  Many of the recipes we use are on the St Mark’s website if you are interested in seeing them and using them at home with your children.

If you are free to help in the kitchen from 11:40 - 1:40pm on any of the Tuesdays, via Seesaw or at tsiegert@smdingley.catholic.edu.au

Arigatou!

Student Reflections:

Livansh - Today I made Apple cakes. It was so fun cutting up the apples.  The eggplants made green bean salad,  Tomatoes made the zucchini slice and I wanted to make the bush tomato dip.The thing that I found challenging was peeling the apples. In the apple cake we put eggs, cinnamon, caster sugar and self raising flour.  I will be trying the apple cakes because it tasted so good.

Ella - Today was a very fun day.   I am in the Tomato group and we made a zucchini slice. The easy thing about making this is that you have helpers. The helpers help you and they give up their time to come to school and help like Greg and Aaron. Aaron is Pia’s dad and Greg is my dad.  There are also teacher helpers who share helping with the dads. Today we had Mel who made the slice with the tomato group.  Thank you Mrs Siegert who runs the SAKG for our school. Today we have made good looking and tasting food that has been cooked by some great students from 3/4 k. The Eggplants made the salad with tomatoes, spring onion and more.  The Zucchini group made a great apple cake.  Finally the carrots made a  tomato dip with real tomatoes from the garden  because before all of the cooking and snacks, half of our class went out to our garden and picked up some stuff for our lunch and put it in the harvest basket so we can find it when we cook.  Also after we cook we need to help our helpers wash the dishes before we can go back and write and then eat.

Alex - I really liked cutting the onions because I thought I would cry but I didn't.  Then my eyes were really hot.  I had to mix the cheese, milk, eggs and zucchinis and we made the zucchini slice.  I really liked mixing the stuff because it felt mushy and so satisfying.  Eggplants made the salad, Zucchini’s made apple muffins and Carrots made the dip. I really want to try the muffins because they look so yummy.

Chloe - Thank you for having us helpers & Ms Siegert. I’m sure everyone loves this cooking and gardening program. I know that I have learnt a lot of cooking skills. I am proud of what I have cooked.  I hope that  this program will stay as long as forever. I wish to cook these meals at home.

Grace - Thank you for having us cooking with you.  The funniest thing in SAKG was when Chloe and I were told to get some cheese and Nikki Sensei said to mush it.  But Mrs Siegert came and told us that we got the wrong cheese… it was meant to be Feta cheese.

Eddie - This week, I was in Salad. But last week I was in Dip. What we did today was make a watermelon salad. Since I couldn’t do much with a fractured arm I was in charge of emptying the compost bin. It was still fun though since I could still see other people's food. I looked at the bread and it really looked good as its vegemite cheesy scrolls. Ours looked really good too. It was literally salad and watermelon together! To wrap it up ( get it? 😂) This week was very exciting and fun.

Louis - We had so much fun at cooking and made a burrito.  Plus this burrito had cheese and vegemite.  We cooked the burrito.  Also this day was absolutely fun even though our hands kept getting dirty because the dip was so delicious.

Aston - The part I enjoyed in S.A.K.G was cutting the red onion because I was crying so much that I had to stop cutting. I stopped crying. What I learned today was not to cut too close to your hands.

Ryan - I made the main meal  which was mashed potatoes and tomato  sauce.  I found the potatoes challenging because it was hard to peel. It was fun cutting the potatoes with my friend Jacob.

Danica - During the cooking session I was in the Carrot group who were making the mashed potatoes. The ingredients are potatoes, butter and salt. Something new I learnt was how to peel potatoes, it was really fun and interesting, a bit tricky though. Definitely my favourite part was the sound of Thalia cutting the potatoes into the quarters was really satisfying.  Overall, in this cooking session, I enjoyed it!

Alannah - Today in cooking my group [carrots] made the main meal with our helper Mel. All of our group had to peel and cut potatoes.  For me it wasn't very hard, since I already do it at home . After we cooked the potatoes we all had a turn to mash the potatoes. Today for our meal we are having veggie mite scrolls, mashed potatoes and tomato sauce with basil, watermelon salad and for dip we are having beetroot tizziki. Today I had a  lot of fun in the kitchen and I think the food will be amazing.
