Reading & Writing
This term, Year 3's will be exploring the text, 'Charlotte's Web' while Year 4's will be exploring, 'The Wild Robot'. During Reading sessions students will unpack new vocabulary, respond to questions about the text and give reasonings for their opinions based on the text.
Students will also continue to nurture their love of reading by engaging with books every day at school. We encourage you to do the same at home, reading of decodable books or books suitable to their level of reading. This is an opportunity to practise paired fluency and will help build your child’s confidence and enjoyment as a reader.
Reading for meaning is very important for our young readers. Talking with your child about what they’re reading is a vital step to support their learning. Ask about the characters, the events in the story, or any new facts they’ve discovered. Encourage them to share their opinions what they liked or didn’t like, and what made the book interesting to them. If you find your child is struggling to talk about their text, speak with your child's teacher about some ideas to support them.
Our Literacy program continues to follow an evidence-based approach. During our Literacy Block, students will strengthen key reading and writing skills including fluency, phonological awareness, handwriting, and the Sounds Write Phonics Program.
In Writing, students will explore a variety of genres, including persuasive texts, developing their opinions and learning how to express their ideas clearly. They will also further develop narrative writing and poetry.
Handwriting will continue to remain an important focus. Practising correct pencil grip, letter formation, and writing neatly on the line both on whiteboards and in their handwriting books.
