2B

By Emma Williams

This term has been an exciting journey into the world of measurement for our Year 2 students! We've been diving deep into understanding length and area, and it's been amazing to see the enthusiasm and curiosity from all our young learners.

Here are some ways we have become MASTERS OF MEASUREMENT!

Mastering the Ruler

We've kicked off by mastering the essential tool for measuring - the ruler! The students have been diligently learning how to identify the important features of a ruler. They now know to start their measurements from the zero mark, not the end of the ruler, ensuring they get accurate and precise readings every time.

Outdoor Measuring Adventures

To make measurement even more fun, we took our learning outside! The students measured various items and objects around the school grounds. They eagerly compared lengths of different objects, from playground equipment to garden plants, practicing their new skills in a real-world setting.

But for some learners, their exploration didn't stop there! We delved into converting measurements between centimetres and millimetres. The students are becoming quite the experts at switching between these units, enhancing their understanding of the metric system.

Discovering Area

When it came to measuring area, our class split into two exciting projects:

  1. Using MAB Unit Blocks: Some learners worked on using MAB unit blocks to find the square units of various shapes. They carefully placed the blocks to cover different shapes, counting the units to determine the area.
  2. Mapping the 2B Classroom: Another group of learners took on the challenge of finding the area of our very own 2B classroom. They drew detailed maps of the classroom, identifying it as a composite shape - a shape made up of two geometric shapes. The students counted the number of carpet squares covering the floor and converted this number into formal metric units to find the total area. It was a fantastic hands-on activity that brought the concept of area to life!

Our measurement unit has been a wonderful blend of indoor and outdoor activities, practical hands-on learning, and plenty of exciting discoveries.
