Inside Classrooms

Cohort and Specialist Updates

Foundation:

In the Foundation classrooms we have been busy with various animal visitors over the last few weeks. Students participated in a local vet visit where they met Dr Wederick and they learnt how to care for and approach animals they see. We have also had the pleasure of caring for our very own chicks. We’ve watched them begin as an egg, hatch and then grow into chicks.

Year 1/2:

At the end of last month students embarked on an exciting journey to Werribee Zoo. They had a blast exploring various animals and their habitats. From lions to giraffes, each exhibit offered a unique learning experience. The day was filled with discovery as students observed and learned about the diverse habitats that animals call home.

In literacy, students have been deeply engaged in researching and writing about Australian animals. Each student selected an animal to study, exploring their habitats, diet, and adaptations for survival. We can’t wait to show you soon.

In maths, students have been diving into the world of fractions. They have been mastering the concept of halves and quarters, applying their knowledge to real-life scenarios and problem-solving activities. Through hands-on exercises and interactive learning, students are gaining a solid understanding of fractions and their practical applications.

Year 3/4:

As we conclude another successful term, we are proud to report our Year 3/4s have worked hard, learned a lot and had lots of fun! Reacent highlights in Year 3/4 include:

  • Fractions with Chocolate: Students used chocolate bars to understand and solve fraction problems, making math fun and memorable.
  • Creating Salt Dough Fossils: Students created salt dough fossils, exploring and replicating the creation of a fossil, sparking their curiosity and enhancing their understanding of how living things adapt and change over time.

Thank you for your continued support. We look forward to seeing our Year 3/4 students refreshed and ready for another exciting term!

Year 5/6:

The 5/6 cohort had the exciting opportunity to visit the Melbourne Zoo two weeks ago. This excursion was a fantastic hands-on learning experience where students explored how various animals adapt to their environments and survive in the wild. The students were particularly fascinated by the diverse ways animals have evolved to thrive in their habitats. It was a day filled with curiosity, learning, and a deeper appreciation for the natural world.

In our writing sessions, the students have been working on creating their own hybrid texts focused on natural disasters of their choice. A hybrid text combines factual information with engaging storytelling, and our young writers have been researching and crafting narratives about events such as earthquakes, tsunamis, and bushfires. This project has allowed them to develop their research skills, improve their writing techniques, and express their creativity.

This week, the classroom was abuzz with lively debates! The students participated in structured debates, honing their ability to construct arguments, present their points clearly, and respectfully counter opposing views. Topics ranged from environmental issues and renewable energy. These debates have not only helped students develop their public speaking and critical thinking skills but also encouraged them to consider multiple perspectives on important issues.

Specialists:

This term, all students from Foundation to year 6 have immersed themselves in music through learning and playing Boomwhackers. All students have enthusiastically embraced the unique percussion instruments, mastering their own class songs to perform confidently at our fortnightly school assemblies. Students from Foundation to Year 2, have also showcased their skills with Boomwhackers, delighting audiences at our end of term celebration music showcase. The integration of Boomwhackers into our curriculum has not only fostered musical proficiency but also encouraged teamwork, creativity, and a deep appreciation for the joy of making music together.

Congratulations to everyone who performed on stage!

Physical Education - House Athletics Day 2024

It was a fabulous day of colour at the Aberfeldie House Athletics Carnival!

All students in year 3-6 ran, jumped and threw their very best! And enjoyed celebrating eachothers success.

The Aberfeldie District Athletics Team will be formalised shortly and information for those students who qualified will be available early next term.

Thank you to all our Parent Volunteers, teachers, leadership and ES members.

It was lovely to see parents and grandparents who came along to support and cheer the students on.

Cultivating Community

The last few weeks of Term 3 have been cold but busy in the garden. A highlight has been working with our Grade 1/2 students recently while Grade 3/4 were busy with Athletics.

Check out these photos of our students finding mini beasts, digging mulch and getting to know our school chickens.

School holidays are coming up soon, and we are looking for volunteers to help care for the chickens and garden over the break. We are also always looking for volunteers to help out during term time. If you are interested in helping during the holidays or on Fridays with garden classes or caring for the garden on other days, please contact joanna@cultivatingcommunity.org.au or leave your name at the front office.

Happy winter gardening everyone!
