Music

Welcome back to Term 3, excited for a full calendar of performances and opportunities for music students!

Intermediate Band Camp

Next week, Intermediate Jazz and Intermediate Band head off to Airey’s Inlet for the annual Band Camp, held at Angahook Holiday Camp. Students will rehearse as a band, try out the low ropes course, hike, fall (safely!) from great heights on the giant swing, and round off the camp with a concert and family BBQ.

This camp is a great opportunity to consolidate learning ahead of the Vic Schools Music Festival, so thank you to all attending students for the work they will do at the camp! Families are reminded to RSVP for the BBQ if you haven’t already done so, and to contact Amanda Linton if you are able to help out with the BBQ prior to the Concert.

Year 1 VET Music students are running a ‘Battle of the Bands’ on Wednesday August 7th, 5.00-7.30pm in the BHS PAC. All Bands are invited to apply to be part of the event, with ticket sales going to a youth mental health charity chosen by the Year 1 VET Music class.

Tickets go on dale on Friday 26th July, and can be accessed on the following link:

It’s shaping up to be a great night of entertainment, so don’t miss out on a ticket!

All BHS Concert bands, and jazz groups will be performing at the Victorian Schools Music Festival again this year. Jazz groups are travelling to Hawthorn Arts Centre on Friday August 2nd, and the Concert Bands performing at the R W Gibson Centre at Christian College, on the 14th and 15th August.

PLEASE NOTE that due to the works at South Geelong railway station, the jazz groups are now departing and arriving back at Geelong main station, so students will need to be dropped off and picked up from Geelong station.

House Music: Friday August 30th

House Music rehearsals start next Monday 22nd July, and each House has six weeks to prepare their two songs before the big event on Friday August 30th. May the best house win!

  TAKE NOTE WORKSHOP SERIES

We are lucky to have secured a workshop with the Melbourne Jazz Festival Take Note workshop series again this year, with jazz mentors visiting BHS and working with our students. These workshops are a great window into life as a professional jazz/session musician, and all jazz band members have been invited to attend the workshop on August 23rd, periods 3+4 in the BHS PAC. Students who would like to be involved who are not in the Jazz Bands are welcome to apply for any vacant workshop spots - see Ms Humphrey to put your name down.

Belmont High School is offering an exciting new program for girls in Years 5+6 who are interested in learning to play Trumpet, Trombone, French Horn  or Tuba in our Girls Play Brass Program.

The program will be run by Belmont High School specialist Brass teachers after school on Wednesdays, from 4.00-4.30pm, in the BHS Performing Arts Centre.

The program will commence in Week 5 of Term 3, 2024, and will finish with a celebration concert in the BHS PAC on December 3rd.

Girls in the program will be supplied with an instrument and participate in small group lessons and performance opportunities. To apply for the program, please email Rose Humphrey on humphreyr@bhs.vic.edu.au or via phone: 03 52435355.

Performing Arts and Band Captains are busy organising a fundraiser for Beyond Blue youth, to be held on Friday September 13th from 6.00 – 9.30pm in the BHS PAC. BHS Jazz groups, solo jazz groups and small combos are performing, and we are excited to announce Michelle Scully and friends as our special guests for the event.

Vet Year 1 and 2 students performed at Geelong’s iconic Barwon Club on the last week of term, to a packed house of family, friends and supporters. We also welcomed Grovedale SC’s year 2 group and solo performers who joined us on the second night. The bands were great, and it was fabulous to hear bands cheering on the next act, and to see the stagecraft and musicianship progress since Term 1. Many thanks to Ashleigh Hunter for helping our Year 1 students achieve such a great standard for their first gig in the community, and to Megan McPherson and Amanda Linton for supporting us all the way with extra staffing assistance, taking great photos, and  gear bump out. A big shout out to the Barwon Club who are such a fabulous supporter of youth music in Geelong.
