Year 9 iSTEM Elective

Year 9 iSTEM students have had a big Term Two, learning lots of new skills and enjoying lots of new experiences. The students began the term finishing off their Lego robotics projects, where most students learnt to build and program their robots for the very first time. They had a go at completing some Lego League challenges from previous years. The students then began a new project on Aerodynamics, learning how to draw Formula 1 cars using computer aided design software and then print their designs using 3D printers, learning how to work with balsa wood to construct rocket fins to test their aerodynamics of bottle rockets.

To foster iSTEM students’ development of STEM skills, they attended a STEM Careers Expo, hosted by CSIRO. During this event, engaged with industry experts to gain insights into their professional journeys, the in-demand skills sought by employers, and the pathways necessary for entering the workforce. The students further participated in a workshop facilitated by industry experts from Sydney Water, Petaurus Education Group, Holland Group, and CSIRO. During this session, they tackled challenges designed to enhance their skill sets and received valuable feedback from the experts.

The upcoming project for iSTEM students will involve learning to construct circuits, design motorized vehicles, and commence training for the First Lego League competition. These activities aim to further develop their core STEM skills through hands-on experience and practical applications.
